Fishermen in Ada, Ada East District, Greater Accra, are terrified after two fishing canoes and three crew members went missing following a fishing excursion.
According to rumours, the crew members will set sail on Wednesday, September 13, 2023. On their way back from their trip on Thursday morning, their boats overturned near the estuary while attempting to join the Volta River.
As of 6:30 p.m. Thursday, seven of the 19 fishermen involved in the tragedy were still missing.
According to Ebenezer Teye Kisseh Nartey, the Ada East District NADMO Coordinator, who confirmed the occurrence, they got a distress call at 7 a.m. on Thursday reporting an accident involving two canoes.
Mr Nartey said that ten of the eleven fishermen onboard one of the canoes named “Shalom” were saved, while two others from a crew of eight onboard another boat named “Barcelona” were discovered in a Volta area hamlet.
Six more fisherman on the second canoe, he claimed, are still missing.
According to the NADMO Coordinator, the first canoe was rescued but severely damaged, while the second boat and its fishing gear were not located.
According to Mr Nartey, NADMO is working with the Ghana Navy on a search and rescue effort for the missing fishermen.
