A leading New Patriotic Party (NPP) member, Dr. Amoako Baah, has accused the Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo government of managing to corrupt the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

According to him, the Managing Director of the IMF, Kristalina Georgieva, recently said the current difficulties in Ghana are not due to the government’s bad policies but due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the Russia-Ukraine war because President Akufo-Addo asked her to.

In a statement sighted, Dr. Amoako slammed the IMF manager for heeding the president’s demands and lying to the world about the cause of Ghana’s challenges.

“I would venture to say that Nana Addo must have appealed to the IMF boss for help in dispelling the narrative that Ghana is in trouble because of mismanagement, thievery, and incompetence. If that were the case, it is in order for him to ask for such help.

“But it is not in order for the IMF boss to describe a country on its knees as a “superb country.” Such a statement is irresponsible because it does not hold the government accountable for the mishandling of the economy,” parts of the statement read.

He further stated that the conclusion drawn by the IMF boss did not make sense because many countries, including some in the West African sub-region, are being affected by the two factors, but none of them is going through the hardships Ghanaians are going through.

“Why is our neighbour, Cote d’Ivoire, with almost the same GDP, located almost at the same location on the globe, equally impacted by Covid 19 and the Ukraine war, not asked for IMF help? If the two conditions above impacted the world, some even worse than Ghana, why are some not at the IMF, and we are?

“Why is Togo, for example, not at the IMF? One cause cannot be used to explain two opposite effects. Ghana goes to IMF because of Covid-19 and the war in Ukraine; Togo does not go to IMF because of Covid-19 and the war in Ukraine. This is counterfeit logic; there must be another explanation for being at the IMF!” he noted.

He reiterated that the current economic challenges in the country are a result of the bad policies of the Akufo-Addo government and pervasive corruption in the country.

Dr. Baah, who is also a political science lecturer at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, also urged the IMF to stop toeing the line of the government and tell the world the truth about Ghana’s economy.

Speaking on the sidelines of the Fund’s engagement with the Ghanaian delegation, Kristalina Georgieva stated that contrary to the narrative from some opposition elements, Ghana is not in these challenges because of any bad policies of the Akufo-Addo administration.

“We have started very constructive discussions already, and to the people of Ghana, like everybody on this planet, you have been hurt by exogenous shocks,” she said.

She mentioned the extraneous factors which have contributed to Ghana’s economic woes leading to the West African country seeking a programme from the IMF.

“First the pandemic, then Russia’s war in Ukraine. We need to realize that it is not because of bad policies in the country but because of this combination of shocks, and, therefore, we have to support Ghana,” she said.

However, he has been sensitive to the constituency's grief over the unexpected death of the Deputy Finance Minister. Mr. Nyantakyi, speaking at the opening of the New Patriotic Party's Ashanti Regional Campaign team in Kumasi, suggested gently that he intends to run for parliament once the official timeline is revealed. He emphasised his strong links to the constituency and his eligibility to run, while also recognising the need of honouring the late MP's grieving time.

Following the untimely death of John Ampontuah Kumah, Member of Parliament for the Ejisu Constituency, the focus is shifting to probable contenders for the empty parliamentary seat.

Kwesi Nyantakyi, former President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), is one significant figure to emerge.

“The Ejisu by-election will definitely come on, but the timetable has not been published yet so we don’t know those who want to contest. Since I come from there and I have the right to contest, at the right time, we’ll see what will happen.

“But at the moment, we are mourning the demise of a very dear son of the constituency. The Member of Parliament is a big loss to the constituency and let’s see what happens after the one week,” Nyantakyi stated.

He urged the rank and file to offer the party’s flagbearer, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, peace of mind when choosing a running partner.

“I think it is a prerogative of the flagbearer to select the running mate, so let’s leave it to him. At the right time, he’ll do that.”

Kwesi Ahwoi criticised his remarks, claiming that he "misspoke on the occasion." I accept the comments in good faith, even if they are based on an intentional misinterpretation of my position.

Kwesi Ahwoi, a member of the Ahwoi family, has issued an unequivocal apology to former President John Dramani Mahama.

He said he never intends to hope that H.E. John Mahama does not serve his entire four-year term if he wins the 2024 general elections.

Kwesi Ahwoi criticised his remarks, claiming that he “misspoke on the occasion.” I accept the comments in good faith, even if they are based on an intentional misinterpretation of my position.

Kwesi Ahwoi writes:

I have taken notice of the unfortunate controversy that has arisen as a result of a comment I made at a reception organized last Thursday by the Churchstreet group of NDC faithfuls for Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, Running Mate to our esteemed flagbearer, H.E. John Dramani Mahama.

I sincerely regret the wrong impression that my comment has created. Indeed, it was not my intention, and never will it be my intention to pray that H.E. John Mahama does not serve his full four-year term when he wins the 2024 general elections.

I concede that I misspoke on the occasion. I accept the criticisms in good faith, even though some of the criticisms arise out of a deliberate misrepresentation of my statement.

Indeed, Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang in response to my toast, pointed out the erroneous impression created by my statement and was categorical in asserting that she was certain that H.E. John Mahama will win the 2024 general elections and serve his full four-year term.

It is unfortunate that my statement appears to have taken the shine off what was otherwise a cheerful and light-hearted occasion.

I hereby render an unreserved and unqualified apology to H.E. John Dramani Mahama, Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, the leadership and rank and file of the great NDC.

Comrades and friends, let us put this unfortunate incident behind us and unite behind our flag-bearer, the visionary Nation Builder, to rescue our beloved country in the December 2024 elections.

SIGNED.
Kwesi Ahwoi
