August Anthony Alsina Jr. was born on September 3, 1992, in New Orleans, Louisiana. He is the son of Sheila and August Alsina, and he grew up with four brothers and sisters: Jamal, Travis, Netia, and Melvin. August was motivated to become a performer after witnessing Lauryn Hill in “Sister Act 2,” and at the age of 14, he began uploading videos on YouTube. Alsina’s father and stepfather were both addicted to crack cocaine, so his mother relocated the family to Houston, Texas, in the hopes of a fresh start; August Sr. died in December of that year. Alsina returned to New Orleans at the age of 16, and after his older brother Melvin was murdered in 2010, August relocated to Atlanta.
Personal Life
As their mother, Chandra died of cancer in 2018, August became the legal guardian of his three nieces, Chaylin, Amaiya, and Kayden. Chandra was engaged to Alsina’s brother Melvin at the time of his unsolved death in 2010. In June 2020, August made headlines when he claimed that Will Smith gave him permission to pursue a romantic connection with Jada Pinkett Smith. Jada said on a July edition of her show “Red Table Talk” that she had been in a relationship with Alsina four and a half years before her divorce from Will.
August has an autoimmune illness that damages his liver, which caused him to fall onstage at a 2014 concert, leaving him in a coma for three days.
