Chris Hughton names his first Black Stars squad for AFCON qualifiers against Angola

Former Brighton & Hove Albion manager Chris Hughton has named his first squad as coach of Ghana’s senior national team, the Black Stars, ahead of this month’s Africa Cup of Nations qualifying matches against Angola.
The Black Stars will host Palancras Negras at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium on Thursday, March 23, before travelling to Luanda for the rematch on March 27.
The 25-man squad is dominated by players who played for Ghana in the World Cup last year in Qatar. Hughton has made some notable additions to the team, including Joseph Paintsil and Joseph Wollacott, who missed the tournament due to a broken finger.
Meanwhile, Baba Rahman has been ruled out due to an injury, and Abdul Fatawu Issahaku, a regular in the squad, has been left out.
Ghana is at joint top of Group E with four points from two games, having won 3-0 over Madagascar and drawn 1-1 with Central African Republic in June of last year. Hughton will look to build on these positive results and lead his team to victory in the Africa Cup of Nations.
Here is the full squad:
Goalkeepers: Lawrence Ati Zigi (FC St. Gallen), Abdul Manaf Nurudeen (Eupen), Joseph Wollacott (Charlton Athletic)

Kwasi Appiah remains Kotoko Sporting Director despite Otumfuor’s permission to coach Sudan

Despite getting authorization from His Majesty Otumfuor Osei Tutu II to take up a coaching post in Sudan, former Ghana coach Kwesi Appiah will continue in his duties as technical director of Asante Kotoko.
While it was first assumed that the experienced coach had accepted an offer to coach Sudan’s national team, his commitment to Asante Kotoko as technical director forced him to wait until final discussions with the club’s leadership were completed before making any decision.
According to the club’s official website, the former Black Stars captain was granted permission to come to Sudan after meeting with the monarch in London. He has, however, consented to continue supervising the Porcupine Warriors’ technical department.
“The life patron of Asante Kotoko, His Majesty Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has blessed our technical director, Kwasi Appiah, to accept the role as Head Coach of the Sudan national team.
“Mr. Appiah will, however, maintain his role as Technical Director of Kotoko,” the club announced.
“He will contest in the Ghana Football Association’s Executive Council elections next month in this capacity.
“The experienced technical expert, who has managed the Black Stars twice during the periods of 2013 to 2014 and 2017 to 2019, is expected to lead the technical direction of Kotoko as we work on restructuring the team.”

There is no pressure from anybody – Asante Kotoko coach Prosper Narteh ahead of Karela clash

Prosper Narteh Ogum, head coach of Ghanaian powerhouse Kumasi Asante Kotoko SC, claims his squad is under no pressure ahead of their match against Karela United FC.
Despite going two games without a win, the coach feels his club is not under any external pressure.
He urged the club’s supporters to show unwavering support for the squad in the week three game on Sunday at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium.
There’s no pressure from anywhere, we are putting the team together for Sunday and I ask all the stakeholders to rally behind us more than they did in our first game.”
“They shouldn’t entertain any fear but to be supportive emotionally and i am sure we are going to play well and win. But I have to commend them for their support on our opening day”, he told the press.

We are building a team that can compete at any level – Prosper Narteh Ogum

Prosper Narteh Ogum, the head coach of Asante Kotoko, has asked the club’s fans for patience as he tries to construct a competitive team capable of success on all fronts.
The Porcupines have yet to win a game in the Ghana Premier League this season, having drawn one and lost the other. Their season began with a draw at home before falling to Bibiani Goldstars 2-1 at Duns Park.
Prosper Narteh, speaking at a pre-match press conference ahead of their encounter against Karela United, emphasised the importance of patience while he assembles a new team.
He stated, “If you look at the performance, it’s a process as I have already indicated, we are putting together a new team and if you are building a new team with a whole lot of new players, old players, different identities, different game understanding and intelligence, I mean it will take some time”
“To me, if I look at the two games we’ve played, they did well looking at the way they played. We have to be realistic to ourselves, if you look at certain components of the game within the two games you can tell that they did well. So it’s all about the players getting to know themselves and then knowing how to react to each other with the ball and without the ball”
