Clarence Thomas was born in June 1948 in Pin Point, Georgia. He allegedly left Conception Seminary College in the aftermath of Martin Luther King, Jr.’s assassination. Thomas subsequently said that he left after overhearing a fellow student make the comment “Excellent.” It’s a good thing I’m not the only one,” only a day after the murder. Clarence realized as a result of this event that the Catholic Church was not doing enough to combat racism within its ranks of prospective priests.
He later transferred to the College of the Holy Cross, where he began as a sophomore. He was a founding member of the school’s Black Student Union. He majored in English literature and graduated with honours in 1971. During his undergraduate years, Thomas was of the ideal age to be recruited into the Army and sent to Vietnam. He avoided the draught through a series of deferments, but when he graduated, he was designated as 1-A, a classification for individuals who were exceedingly likely to be selected. He was brought in for a medical checkup, which he failed owing to spinal curvature. Because of his medical condition, he was unable to be drafted. Clarence then attended Yale Law School, where he graduated in the middle of his class in 1974 with a Juris Doctor degree.

From 1971 through 1984, Thomas was married to his college sweetheart Kathy Grace Ambush. They have one child as a couple. Tom married Republican lobbyist Virginia Lamp in 1987. Virginia, who goes by Ginni.
Clarence has been irritated by Ginni Thomas’ lobbying career at various points throughout the years. She was working for the conservative think group The Heritage Foundation in 2000, assisting the George W. Bush campaign with a résumé collection for Presidential appointments. This was happening when the Supreme Court was deliberating in Bush v. Gore, the lawsuit that awarded Bush the election. Many people saw this as a blatant conflict of interest for both Clarence and Ginni.

Crowe later reportedly spent millions of dollars to rehabilitate a Georgia cannery where Thomas’ mother formerly worked, ostensibly at Thomas’ request.
Ginni started Liberty Consulting, a for-profit consulting firm, in 2011 to assist contributors in the post-Citizens United scenario. The irony here is that Citizens United empowered Ginni to take corporate payments to influence legislation that her husband would hear at the Supreme Court.
Clarence was chastised in 2011 for neglecting to disclose Ginni’s salary and career history. His wife’s work and income were “inadvertently excluded owing to a misunderstanding of the filing procedures” at the time he claimed. To correct the error, Thomas published seven pages of updated disclosures, including 13 years of income re-statements that reflected Ginni’s tenure at the Heritage Foundation. According to these documents, Ginni received $686,589 from the Heritage Foundation between 2003 and 2007.
Ginni Thomas is known to routinely share extreme conspiracy claims on her own Facebook page, including ones from an anti-vax Facebook group that claimed Bill Gates engineered COVID-19. Ginni allegedly demanded that the mayor of Clifton, Virginia remove a banner from the town that stated “Welcome to Clifton, Where Black Lives Matter”.
A gang of Trump supporters assaulted and robbed the United States Capitol on January 6, 2021. Ginni called on Congress to reject the election results only days before the rioting. On the morning of the riots (before the violence broke out), Ginni proclaimed her love and support for the rioters on her Facebook page, stating “GOD BLESS EVERYONE OF YOU STANDING UP or PRAYING!”. Trump supporters carried zip-tied handcuffs, placed IEDs, trashed property, stole state secrets, and murdered policemen during the incident.
Ginni frequently posts bizarre conspiracy ideas on her own Facebook page. She tweeted just before the rioting, “No one, and I repeat no one, has done more to destroy America than the Democrats.” She has promoted the baseless conspiracy theory that George Soros is in charge of the Democratic Party and is supporting a plot to undermine the US government and President Trump.
The Congressional committee investigating the January 6th insurgency uncovered text conversations purportedly sent from Ginni Thomas to then-President Donald Trump’s Chief of Staff, Mark Meadows, in March 2022. Ginni and Mark allegedly exchanged 29 text messages between early November and mid-January 2021.
Career
Clarence travelled to Missouri after graduation to practise law. He was hired as an Assistant Attorney General of Missouri after passing the bar, reporting to state Attorney General John Danforth. He held this job from 1974 until 1977 when he was employed as an attorney by the Monsanto Chemical Corporation. Clarence relocated to Washington, D.C. in 1979 to work for John Danforth, who had been elected to the United States Senate at the time.
Clarence served as a legislative assistant for the Senate Commerce Committee from 1979 to 1981, mostly on energy matters. Clarence worked as the Assistant Secretary of Education for the Office for Civil Rights from 1981 to 1982. From May 1982 to March 1990, Thomas was the Head of the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. George H. W. Bush nominated him to the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit in October 1989.
When George H. W. Bush was searching to replace Justice William Brennan on the Supreme Court in 1990, he considered Clarence Thomas, but finally chose David Souter. When Justice Thurgood Marshall stepped down a year later, Bush nominated Clarence.
Clarence’s confirmation hearings quickly became one of the most heated and divisive events of the 1990s. Claims of sexual harassment by Thomas were public and made headlines. The accusations were made by a lady named Anita Hill. Hill worked for Thomas at the US Department of Education and the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission at the same time. Anita initially did not make the claims public. The charges surfaced after a leaked FBI interview with Anita. Hill was asked to testify after the charges were made public.
Anita stated in public hearings in October 1991 that Thomas sexually harassed her when he was her boss at two different government positions. He allegedly persistently invited her out and made sexually charged and graphic remarks to her. Thomas allegedly boasted about “his own sexual aptitude” while detailing his body.
