According to Kumasi-based Opemsuo Radio, Asante Kotoko SC has rehired former coach Dr Prosper Narteh Ogum to manage the team for the forthcoming season. His appointment was officially announced last night by the Manhyia Palace.
Dr Ogum previously departed the team following the 2021-22 season, after leading them to their first Ghana Premier League title in eight years. Following his departure, the club hired Burkinabe trainer Seydou Zerbo as coach, leading the squad in several tournaments such as the CAF Champions League and the MTN FA Cup.
Zerbo, on the other hand, was fired midway through the previous season after a defeat to Medeama SC at the Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi. Abdul Gazale, the club’s assistant coach in charge of the young team, was subsequently appointed as a caretaker coach until the conclusion of the season. Under Gazale’s direction, the squad finished fourth with 52 points from 34 games.
Dr Ogum’s return is now anticipated to focus on managing the club’s recruiting and pre-season training as they seek to recapture the Premiership championship in the upcoming 2023-24 season.
In addition to this appointment, the Manhyia Palace is expected to pick a new executive board chairman in the coming days to manage other activities in preparation for the season, which is planned to begin in September, according to the Ghana Football Association.
