Daniel Dwight Tosh was born on May 29, 1975, in Boppard, Rhineland-Palatinate, West Germany. Tosh grew up in Titusville, Florida, the son of a Presbyterian preacher. Tosh has two sisters and one brother. He attended the University of Central Florida after graduating from Astronaut High School in 1993. He graduated from college in 1996 with a marketing degree, half a semester early owing to his desire to pursue a comedy career, and worked as a telemarketer at the Central Florida Research Park for $15 per hour to pay the bills before moving to Los Angeles to pursue his ambition. Before getting into comedy, he worked as a door-to-door knife salesman.
Personal Life
From 2009 until 2004, Tosh dated Megan Abrigo, one of the models on the NBC show Deal or No Deal. On April 15, 2016, Tosh and Carly Hallam married in Malibu, California. The couple’s interaction with the media is extremely secretive. As of this writing, they have no children.
Tosh has stated that he suffers from extreme social anxiety and, despite his on-stage character, despises public speaking. At one point, his father worked for him as his personal social media manager and operated Tosh’s website. In his spare time, Daniel likes surfing, gambling, and writing.
Career
After graduation, Tosh relocated to Los Angeles to begin travelling the comedy club circuit as a stand-up comedian. He was one of the highlighted New Faces at 1998 Just for Laughs comedy festival. Tosh refers to a travelling comic’s performance as “Groundhog Day,” a reference to the film of the same name. He had intended to retire on his 38th birthday in 2013 if he hadn’t made it as a comic by then, and he even had a countdown clock on his website that showed the number of days, minutes, and seconds till his birthday.
Tosh’s big break came in 2001 when he appeared on the Late Show with David Letterman. Following his appearance on the Late Show, Tosh appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, and Comedy Central’s Premium Blend. Meanwhile, he was presenting Tens, a late-night comedy programme in Florida, and voicing Taco Bell commercials. He has been on several radio programmes, including The Bob and Tom Show, Loveline, and Kevin and Bean. Tosh received the opportunity to appear in his own 30-minute special on Comedy Central Presents, and his first stand-up special, Daniel Tosh: Completely Serious, premiered on Comedy Central in June 2007.
Tosh’s CDs include “True Stories I Made Up,” published in 2005 (the same year he was designated one of the Top 10 Comics to Watch), “Completely Serious,” released in 2007, and “Happy Thoughts,” released in 2011. He has been in stand-up comedy specials on Comedy Central. Daniel Tosh: Completely Serious was released in 2007, Daniel Tosh: Happy Thoughts was released in 2011, and Daniel Tosh: People Pleaser was released in 2016. From 2012 through 2015, Tosh voiced Malloy and executive produced the television series Brickleberry. In 2011, 2012, and 2013, he was nominated for Teen Choice Awards. In 2014, the average ticket price for his event was a little more than $160. Tosh had a brief appearance in the 2008 film “The Love Guru,” which was his sole cinematic involvement.
Tosh.0, Tosh’s Comedy Central online video clip TV show, began on June 5, 2009, and rapidly became one of the network’s highest-rated shows. Tosh.0 is a regular guest on The Bob & Tom Show, and he continues to travel the country for sold-out events.
Tosh’s comedy may be classified as an observational, dark comedy, insult comedy, and sarcasm. His ridiculing approach is commonly described as pushing the edge, being non-politically correct, and containing punchlines that are purposely self-deprecating, sexist, racist, or homophobic. He was chastised in 2012 for delivering a series of offensive rape jokes at a Hollywood comedy club, sparking a protracted debate among comics regarding the acceptability of such jokes. Tosh eventually apologised for his actions. He has stated in several interviews that his funny approach does not reflect his true personal ideas and that it is all a persona.
Philanthropic Works
Tosh has organised an annual stand-up event called Tosh Saves the World, which has featured other well-known comedians such as Chelsea Peretti, Hannibal Buress, Bo Burnham, and Kumail Nanjiani. The revenues are donated to various organisations. Tosh has performed at benefit concerts for the family of murdered comic Greg Giraldo and for Alabama disaster relief.
