D.L. Hughley, aka Darryl Lynn Hughley, was born on March 6, 1963, in Portsmouth, Virginia. He is the son of Audrey Hughley, a Delta Air Lines maintenance worker, and Charles Hughley. After D.L. was born, the family moved to California after only two months in Portsmouth. He grew up in South Central, Los Angeles, and as a teenager, he was involved with the street gang The Bloods. He was expelled from San Pedro High School, but he turned away from gang life and obtained his GED. He later began working for The Los Angeles Times.

Personal Life

Hughley and LaDonna Hughley have been married since February 1986. Ryan, Tyler, and Kyle are their three children. Kyle was diagnosed with Asperger’s syndrome as a child, which Hughley has extensively discussed. Hughley revealed an affair early in his marriage in an interview on Angela Yee’s podcast, Lipservice, in November 2017. He unknowingly fathered a child with his extramarital lover. Tragically, the infant was killed by his mother’s boyfriend when he was only nine months old.

Ladonna learned of the tragedy and, deeply saddened and affected by the situation, began providing financial assistance to his ex-lover. LaDonna did this completely unaware of D.L., and she kept it a secret from him for many years. Hughley collapsed while performing at a Nashville club on June 19, 2020. He was later found to be positive for COVID-19. He had been asymptomatic, and his son and some of his radio show crew tested positive for COVID as well.
