Don’t ban the ‘Ashaiman to the World’ concert; beef up security instead – MP

Member of Parliament for the Ashaiman Constituency, Ernest Henry Norgbey, has said the ‘Ashaiman to the World’ music festival should not be banned as some have suggested but rather, a collaboration between the organiser and the police service should be improved.

The lawmaker said this on Wednesday, 7 September 2022, on Class 91.3 FM’s news analysis programme 5o5, hosted by Korku Lumor.

During this year’s edition of the annual music event hosted by reggae/dancehall artiste Stonebwoy, the police arrested 42 suspects and retrieved from them items which included two toy pistols, 10 mobile phones, five cutlasses, five jack knives, three pairs of scissors, one wig and a tablet.

The assembly member for Ashaiman Official Town, Mr Ayeku Edmond, also disclosed that people were robbed during the health walk which was part of the ‘Ashaiman to the World’ festival.

He noted crime at the festival was not new as the same happened “last year, or last two years” also.

Speaking on 5o5, he added, “I was told also, at the programme a boy had been stabbed. So, I think, about two deaths on that Saturday. We’ll discuss that at the assembly.”

In his view, “that programme, we have to put a stop to it.”

Reacting to this, the Member of Parliament for Ashaiman shared a different view. He thinks banning the event will be disadvantageous.

“I have been doing my personal checks on these matters and you’ll realise that the cancellation of this particular programme will be a bit uncomfortable to some of us and also the youth.”

Mr Ernest Henry Norgbey is of the view that Stonebwoy, a native of the town was simply fulfilling a social responsibility.

“What we need to do rather, is extending security whenever this kind of concert [comes around] because Stonebwoy is an Ashaiman boy who wanted to give back to the society and I’m not sure we’ll be able to prevent that aspect of him.”

The solution he proposed to the security tensions the event annually comes with was, “to strengthen security, beef up security whenever this kind of programme is being organised by Stonebwoy.”

Mr Norgbey recommended the organisation of the event should be reexamined and collaboration with the police service worked on.

“Be it as it may, we really need to look at it, how the organisation is done, whether the police were involved in the organisation, whether they were informed, etc. If they are not or they were not informed, then going forward, we need to do a lot of work on that.”

"We recognise that the language of the message may have been inappropriate, and we accept the concerns highlighted. "It was not our intention to cause any harm, and we value and respect the contributions and rights of individuals with disabilities in our society," he said in a statement. Sammy Flex stated that the Shatta Movement is devoted to fostering diversity and understanding. "We pledge to be more aware of our words and deeds in the future. "Thank you for bringing this to our attention, and we appreciate your understanding," he said. Shatta Wale chastised Stonebwoy for missing the much-anticipated Fadama Sallah Fest.

The Shatta Movement Empire has apologised to members of the Ghana Society of the Physically Disabled after Shatta Wale was caught “mocking” his colleague Stonebwoy’s handicap.

Shatta Wale’s manager, Samuel Atuobi Baah, wrote to the GSPD, stating that the ‘kakai’ hitmaker had no intention of mocking or denigrating those with disabilities.

Sammy Flex, as he is generally known, stated that his artist’s primary goal was to demonstrate the importance of Stonebwoy respecting others and maintaining correct conduct.

“We recognise that the language of the message may have been inappropriate, and we accept the concerns highlighted.

“It was not our intention to cause any harm, and we value and respect the contributions and rights of individuals with disabilities in our society,” he said in a statement.

In his rage on stage, he used several ‘unprintable’ remarks against Stonebwoy, including mocking his limp, which many people believed were unnecessary even if he had a feud with the ‘Nominate’ singer.

However, a week later, the GSPD denounced Shatta Wale’s conduct as reckless and potentially injurious to the emotional health of the physically impaired.

In a news release, the GSPD stated that they had observed a video circulating on social media in which Shatta Wale mocked Stonebouy’s disabilities.

Shatta Wale claimed in the video, among other nasty things, “You are a bad person, that is why God made you a disabled person; you are a disabled person, don’t try to fight an able person.”

“By making this comment, he is implying that all people with disabilities are terrible because God created us that way. This unsophisticated comment should not have come from a well-known figure like Shatta Wale,” the statement stated.

The group urged Shatta Wale to apologise to the community and take steps to remove the insulting videos from social media networks.

Furthermore, one singer, Bosheba De Shyne, voiced disgust at Shatta Wale following his words on the Sallahfest stage.

The musician with a handicap stated that he did not think it was appropriate for an artist he admires to weaponize his impairment by insulting a colleague.

Meanwhile, the GSPD issued a fresh press statement acknowledging Shatta Wale and his team’s apologies.

“We accept the apology and appreciate their commitment to promoting inclusivity, as there is a need for all of us to work together and create a more inclusive environment for all, regardless of disabilities.”

“We’d also like to use this occasion to thank everyone in the disability community for their patience and all stakeholders for their support. “Let us remember that disability can strike anyone at any time,” they said.
