Godfred Yeboah Dame, the Attorney General, has raised worry over statements made by persons in high positions that may have an influence on the pending criminal prosecution of James Gyakye Quayson, the Member of Parliament-elect for Assin North.
The Attorney General is particularly concerned by efforts to overturn the high court judge’s decision to hear the perjury case against the MP-elect on a daily basis.
Dormaahene Oseadeeyo Agyeman Badu II, a traditional leader as well as a high court judge, made one such petition.
On July 1, he made the appeal at the John Evans Atta Mills 10th Anniversary Commemorative Lecture in Sunyani.
Oseadeoyo Agyeman Badu II made an urgent request to the President and the Attorney General to halt the trial and submit a nolle prosequi to overturn the ruling.
Attorney General Godfred Dame responded by saying that his office will release a detailed statement to address all of the issues highlighted.
He emphasised that such statements might have an impact on the fair judgement of the case. He went on to say that any remarks that undermine the administration of justice are harmful and should not be permitted.
“I will come out with a proper statement on the matter and it will be in respect of all comments generally which have the tendency to subvert the administration of justice, I think that it is very unhealthy for our democratic dispensation and we must not countenance same.”
