The Electoral Commission (EC) has consented to monitor the National Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential and parliamentary primaries after one of the contestants, Dr Kwabena Duffuor, dropped his injunction against the polls.
Dr Duffuor requested an injunction against the primaries on May 9 due to purported inconsistencies in the delegates’ registration.
He eventually dropped the action on Friday, May 12, following meetings with the party’s leadership.
Dr Duffuor expressed concern about several anomalies in the party’s voter registration ahead of Saturday’s primaries and requested a postponement to allow for the concerns to be remedied.
After not receiving a sufficient response from the party, he moved to request an injunction against the primaries.
Due to the order, the Electoral Commission decided to halt its oversight of the primaries on May 10.
However, only hours before the primaries and following the withdrawal of Dr Duffuor’s injunction, the Electoral Commission said in a statement that it has chosen to monitor the primaries set for Saturday, May 13, after the parties reached an agreement.
Below is EC’s full statement
Following the discontinuance of the Application for Injunction seeking to restrain the Electoral Commission from conducting the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Primaries by the applicants, namely Dr Kwabena Duffuor and Mr Edgar Asamoah Boateng, all legal barriers have been removed and the way is now clear for the Electoral Commission to supervise the conduct of the NDC Primaries slated for Saturday .13u- May 2023.
The Commission has this afternoon held meetings with the leadership of the NDC to finalize modalities for the conduct of the elections.
Arrangements are being put in place to ensure a credible and transparent election.
