France defeated Brazil in an exciting encounter at the 2023 Fifa Women’s World Cup in Brisbane, thanks to captain Wendie Renard’s late header.
Eugenie le Sommer put France ahead after 17 minutes, but Debinha equalised in the second half.
There was end-to-end action as two of the tournament’s pre-tournament favourites delivered a game that lived up to the hype.
But it was Renard, who had been ruled out due to injury, who scored the game-winning goal with seven minutes remaining.
“She is the leader of the team,” France coach Herve Renard said of his skipper. “It wouldn’t be the same if she couldn’t play today.” We were fortunate to have her today.”

Brazil would have advanced to the last 16 with a win, but must now wait until the penultimate matchday to try to secure a place in the knockout round.

Pia Sundhage’s team will face Jamaica in their last group encounter, while France will face Panama. Both games will take place on August 2nd, beginning at 11 a.m. BST.

Jamaica won its first-ever Fifa Women’s World Cup match in Perth, thanks to Allyson Swaby’s goal.
