The Federation of Universities Senior Staff Associations (FUSSAG) has joined the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) in its strike for better working conditions.

FUSSAG, in a statement, said, “our members are also actively involved in the strike in whatever form, shape or direction it takes”.

UTAG is striking to demand that the government reverse its decision to pay the 2022 fuel ex-pump allowance instead of the 2021 price, as well as the payment of vehicle maintenance and off-campus allowances.

The Teachers and Educational Workers Union (TEWU), the Senior Staff Association of Universities of Ghana (SSA-UoG), and the Ghana Association of University Administrators are also on strike (GAUA).

The strike was supported by the Technical University Teachers’ Association of Ghana (TUTAG).

It stated that its support for UTAG’s strike stems from “mutual interest,” and it threatened to take similar action.

The National Labour Commission (NLC) has directed the striking unions to end their strike immediately.

The NLC reached this conclusion after meeting UTAG members on Thursday, October 20, 2022.

The Commission issued the following directive:

  1. The parties engage fitter on the “Terms of Payment and other related matters.
  2. Both parties should bring people with a mandate to take and make decisions to the engagement table.
  3. That the engagement should be held in good faith
  4. That UTAG should call off the strike immediately
  5. That the parties are given two weeks to conclude their engagement on the report
