Greg was born in Buffalo, New York, on January 22, 1988. His family relocated to Terra Haute, Indiana, when he was nine years old, and he attended Sarah Scott Middle School. He subsequently moved to Indianapolis, Indiana, with his mother and brother, where he attended Lawrence North High School and played basketball. Oden led his high school basketball team to three consecutive Indiana Class 4A titles and was named National Boys Basketball Player of the Year in 2005 and 2006.

Greg joined Ohio State University for the 2006-07 season and made his collegiate debut on December 2nd, 2006, after missing the first half of the season due to a wrist injury. He ended with 14 points, 10 rebounds, and 5 blocks. Greg was regarded as a “once-in-a-decade player” by sports announcer Steve Kerr that year.

Oden had a great collegiate career, winning Defensive Player of the Year and reaching the National Championship game in 2007. Greg was chosen to the Associated Press All-American squad as the first rookie to do so since 1990. After one year of collegiate basketball, Oden revealed his intention to join the 2007 NBA draught.

Career

Greg was chosen first overall by the Portland Trail Blazers, but due to a knee injury, Oden missed his rookie season. Greg missed one-quarter of the 2008-09 season due to different ailments, but he put up remarkable numbers in the games he did play.

His third season was a letdown, as he only played 21 of 82 games due to a fractured patella. The Trail Blazers confirmed in November 2010 that Oden will miss the entire 2010-11 season due to microfracture surgery on his left knee, making this Greg’s fourth year without playing a full season.

Oden’s rehabilitation had significant setbacks in 2011 and 2012, requiring more operations than originally anticipated, and Portland dismissed Greg from their squad in 2012 to create a place for trade additions. Oden declared that he will not participate in the 2012-13 season in order to focus on his recovery.

Greg joined the Miami Heat the next year and made his long-awaited comeback to the court. That season, Oden started 23 games for the Heat, who advanced to the NBA playoffs before falling to the San Antonio Spurs.

Greg spent the following two years preparing for a comeback to the NBA, which never materialised. Oden signed a one-year, $1.2 million contract with the Jiangsu Dragons of the Chinese Basketball Association on August 26, 2015. Greg left the squad about halfway through the season.

Oden is now an athlete consultant at Edyoucore Sports & Entertainment, a Baltimore-based firm that provides financial education and advising services to consumers, with a focus on assisting amateur and professional athletes in understanding their financial realities.

Relationships

Greg was charged with violence and three additional offences in August 2014 after hitting his ex-girlfriend in the face. He pled guilty to violence causing slight bodily harm, and the other three counts were withdrawn.
