Kan Dapaah, the Minister of National Security, has sued the organiser of the #FixTheCountry Movement, Oliver Barker-Vormawor, stating that National Security and other government officials met with him in 2021 and offered him money to allegedly quiet him.
Barker-Vormawor made the charges after he and others were freed by police on September 22 after being arrested for organising a rally in Accra in violation of a restraining order issued by the police.
Kan Dapaah’s petition asks the court, among other things, to determine that Barker-Vormawor’s statements are defamatory.
He is also demanding the “recovery of the sum of Ten Million Ghana Cedis (GHC10,000,000.00) as General Damages including Aggravated and/or Exemplary Damages for Defamation for the words uttered by Defendant.”
He is also seeking an apology and retraction of the allegedly defamatory comments, as well as “a perpetual injunction restraining the Defendant from repeating similar or other defamatory words against the Plaintiff.”
Mr. Barker-Vormawor stated that he was promised $1 million and other lucrative government posts in order to put a halt to the activism that was allegedly painting the government black.
The activist stated that he had proof to back up his allegation, but he has yet to release the files.
The charges were refuted by the Ministry of National Security in a statement issued on September 22, 2023.
