Kenneth Cornelius Smith was born in Queens, New York, on March 8, 1965. He was raised in the Queens residential complex LeFrak City. Smith attended Archbishop Molloy High School. There, he was coached by Jack Curran, who is known as the high school coach with the most wins in the United States. Curran coached NBA players Brian Winters, Kevin Joyce, Robert Werdann, and Kenny Anderson. Smith was named a McDonald’s All-American in 1983 for his basketball abilities.

Personal Life

Smith’s first marriage was to Dawn Reavis. They had two children: Kayla Brianna, an upcoming R&B performer, and K.J., who followed in his father’s footsteps and played basketball at the University of North Carolina. Smith was then married to former “Price is Right” model Gwendolyn Osborne from 2006 to 2018. They initially met at a charity event in 2004. Smith and Osborne have two children together, a son Malloy (born 2008) and a daughter London (born 2012), and Smith was also the stepfather of Osborne’s previous relationship’s daughter Monique.

Career

Smith began his professional basketball career with the Sacramento Kings, who chose him as the sixth choice in the 1987 NBA draught. He had an outstanding first season, averaging 13.8 points and 7.1 assists per game and earning a position on the NBA All-Rookie Team. He remained with the Kings until 1989-90 when he was moved to the Houston Rockets. He remained with the Rockets for the following six seasons, during which he averaged 17.7 points per game and helped the club to a 52-30 record (which was the best regular season in franchise history at the time). Smith also won two NBA titles while playing with the Rockets.

Smith joined the Detroit Pistons after leaving the Rockets at the end of the 1995-96 season. He did, however, only play nine games with the Pistons before being discarded and signed by the Orlando Magic. He was only with the Magic for six games before being dismissed. He later joined the Denver Nuggets. He played the rest of the 1996-97 season with the Nuggets before retiring from professional basketball. Smith began working as a studio commentator for Turner Sports in 1998, after finishing his ten-year professional basketball career. He appeared on the show “Inside the NBA” with Ernie Johnson Jr., Charles Barkley, and Shaquille O’Neal, which earned the Sports Emmy Award for Outstanding Studio Show. Smith has also made appearances on NBA TV and provided analysis for the NCAA tournament on CBS/Turner. From 2005 through 2008, he gave commentary for MSG Network broadcasts of New York Knicks games.
