Rita Naa Odoley Sowah, Member of Parliament for La Dade Kotopon, has voiced displeasure with the administration for failing to rebuild the destroyed La General Hospital.
On TV3’s News Central on November 9, 2023, the MP decried that several government officials had pledged to resume construction on the project, but no action had been taken.
According to her, until the Majority Leader in Parliament, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu declared in Parliament on November 9th, 2023 that sponsors of the La General Hospital had withdrawn their support since the Ghanaian government had sought a bailout from the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
“I was surprised on the floor of Parliament yesterday when the Majority Leader said that due to lack of funding, the government may not be able to complete the La General Hospital anytime soon. Meanwhile, several ministers have promised us dates to finish the project which never came to pass”.
“It was also captured in last year’s budget, even with that it was captured at a small place in the budget under Agenda 111 and I know under the Agenda 111, we do have regional hospitals so now what is happening?” she queried.
She went on to say that during the sod-cutting ceremony for the hospital’s rebuilding, the government pledged to finish the project and give it over in two years. However, it has been almost two years and the residents of La and its surrounding areas have been kept in uncertainty.
Madam Odoley Sowah has threatened to picket at the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Health if the Minister of Health does not address the current impasse.
