A bridesmaid says she was conflicted when she learned her friend’s fiancé was in love with her, in what some have compared to a scene from the cult classic Love Actually. According to the anonymous woman, the lovelorn groom-to-be texted her a slew of texts declaring his “undying love” for her just days before the wedding.
Her friend’s fiancé admitted in the texts that he had loved her “from afar” for months but had no idea what to do about it. Just two days later, she had to watch as he exchanged wedding vows with her friend, her insides “screaming” the entire time.
The stunned bridesmaid told the Girls Overheard Podcast that this was the “biggest secret” she’d ever had to keep.
“What he wrote in the texts is some of the nicest things anyone has ever said to me, although obviously highly inappropriate,” she revealed in the letter, which was read aloud by one of the shocked hosts.
“He’s been admiring me from afar for months and hasn’t known what to do about it.”
“This was two days before his wedding to my friend, at which I was a bridesmaid,” she continued. I had to watch as they exchanged vows.
“My insides were screaming as they asked if anyone objected, but I couldn’t say anything, especially after they announced they were pregnant at the wedding.”
The hosts compared the situation to a scene from the classic romcom Love Actually, in which best man Mark (Andrew Lincoln) confesses his feelings for Juliet (Keira Knightley), his best friend’s new bride (Chiwetel Ejiofor).
However, many listeners were unsure and saw the two secret confessions as vastly different.
“Have they seen Love Actually?” one person asked. “The one-sided love was coming from someone who had no partner and had no intention of telling before being caught.”
Another person commented that his declaration was “likely just a fantasy version of her in his head to distract from the issues in his own relationship and the responsibility of becoming a father.”
Some thought she was right to keep quiet, while others thought she should have told her friend before the wedding, with a third writing, “Nah that’s savage that she let her marry him! I had to tell a girl who I didn’t even know that she was being cheated on. It’s cruel not to tell a friend.”
