Over 1,550 people have been arrested by ECG for illegal connections

According to an operation conducted by the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) in the Tema Region, 1,555 illegal connections were discovered in February 2023 alone.

The Revenue Protection Unit of the ECG in the Tema Region found a total of 6,491 unlawful connections between September 2022 and February 2023.

However, the month of February had the most illegal connections.

A total of GHC2,149,148.25 has been recovered from the GHC2,891,263.4 that ECG billed the arrested people throughout the time.

The electricity distribution firm discovered these illegalities during normal metre monitoring to ensure the integrity of metres, which is one of ECG’s primary responsibilities.

According to ECG, the apprehended clients will be charged with theft and prosecuted.

ECG has so warned consumers to avoid all types of unlawful connection, such as metre bypass, metre tampering, and direct connection, stating that “basically, customers should please avoid fidgeting with all ECG installations, including metres.”

Tema Region is divided into nine districts: Tema North, Tema South, Nungua, Afienya, Prampram, Ada, Krobo, Juapong, and Ashaiman.
