Oscar Gutiérrez was born in Chula Vista, California on December 11, 1974. scar Gutiérrez comes from a wrestling family, and his uncle also fought as Rey Mysterio. Two of his cousins, as well as his son and nephew, are wrestlers.
Gutierrez and his wife Angie have had two children together during their marriage. The family practises Roman Catholicism.
Personal Life
Rey Mysterio has been embroiled in a number of controversies throughout his career. “Sports Illustrated” published an article in 2007 linking several WWE wrestlers to steroid and HGH use. Gutierrez was one of the wrestlers mentioned. The WWE eventually suspended him for 30 days, but Mysterio defended himself by claiming that he had been legally prescribed the medication by a licenced doctor. However, it appears that Rey did not get the message after his first suspension, as he was suspended again by the WWE in 2012 for a similar offence.
The death of Perro Aguayo Jr. is probably the most shocking controversy in which Rey has been involved. The wrestler died inside the ring during a match between Extreme Tiger, Mysterio, and Manik. Mysterio droppedkicked Aguayo, who was killed by the strike. However, no one realised Aguayo was actually dead because everyone assumed he had been knocked out. When it became clear that Aguayo had stopped breathing, he was rushed to the hospital, where he was revived. These efforts were ultimately futile, and he was declared dead on March 21, 2015.
Mysterio allegedly owns a $1 million home in Chula Vista, California. The house is approximately 4,000 square feet in size and was built in 2004. It has five bedrooms and a number of interesting features. Rey’s extensive tropical fish collection is housed in a large fish tank. He also has an extensive collection of swords and other blades and a sizable collection of action figures.
Career
Scar Gutiérrez was 14 years old when he began wrestling in Mexico. Having been trained by his uncle (Rey Mysterio Sr.), scar Gutiérrez quickly learned the Lucha Libre wrestling style and became known for his “high-flying” wrestling moves. Finally, in 1991, he received the honour of carrying on his uncle’s name and was dubbed “Rey Mysterio Jr.” Rey joined World Championship Wrestling after a brief stint with the AAA in Mexico and a year with Extreme Championship Wrestling.
He spent his first two years in the WCW fighting wrestlers like Dean Malenko, Prince Iuakea, and Lord Steven Regal in the cruiserweight division. During this time, Mysterio was also known for his feud with New World Order. He had won his third cruiserweight title by 1998, defeating Juventud. He then had knee surgery, which kept him out of commission for six months.
The WCW forced Mysterio to remove his mask in 1999. He has since stated that he never wanted to be unmasked and that the WCW forced him to do so. It was hurtful to his family, according to Scar Gutiérrez, because it went against the traditions of the Mexico Lucha Libre style. Mysterio also complained that his unmasking occurred during a “throwaway match,” rather than as part of a grand climax. He also revealed that he was given the option to “lose his mask or lose his job.”
Over the next few years, Mysterio established himself as a “giant killer,” defeating bigger opponents like Kevin Nash and Scott Norton. Despite Rey’s growing popularity, the WCW production team did not see the cruiserweight division as a primary programming source, preferring more traditional wrestling events. Mysterio was told repeatedly by the WCW that he would never be a “main eventer.” Rey Mysterio worked with No Limit Soldiers and later the Filthy Animals from 1999 to 2001.
Rey Mysterio returned to the independent circuit in Mexico and the United States after the WCW folded. In 2002, he signed with WWE and was given permission to re-wear his mask. He feuded with Eddie Guerrero during this time before becoming World Heavyweight Champion. Before teaming up with Sin Cara, he won a number of other titles. His storylines were wrapped up in 2013, and he left the WWE. After that, Mysterio returned to the AAA and fought in Japan before rejoining the WWE in 2018.
