Sonny Barger was born on October 8, 1938, in Modesto, California, United States. His parents are Robert Varger and Kathryn Carmella. There is no further information about his family. According to some sources, his father was an alcoholic, and his mother abandoned the family when he was only four years old. His father, on the other hand, raised him and her sister.

Barger was expelled multiple times after getting into a fight in school and assaulting teachers. He eventually lost interest in school and spent the majority of his time at a grocery store. In 1954, he was still a student at Oakland High School and founded the Earth Angels group.
