The National Media Commission (NMC) has issued a warning to 15 television stations, directing them to stop broadcasting programming that is not acceptable for public consumption.
The NMC cautioned that if they do not advise themselves, they may face serious repercussions.
The public reported these TV stations for airing information that violated media ethical standards, Ghanaian culture, customs, and conventions.
Adwenpa TV, Eagle TV, Best TV, Energy TV, Diamond TV, X TV, Asomdwie TV, Funny TV, Advice TV, Big TV, Passion TV, Nkabom TV, Seekers TV, and Elephant TV are among them.
The NMC published a statement on Thursday saying, “For the stations listed above, we hereby serve them notice to cease and desist from those activities or face severe consequences.”
The reportage was the result of a partnership between the Commission and the National Communications Authority (NCA) to identify and remedy deficiencies in broadcast material, according to the Commission.
The public reported 318 instances, according to the data. The commission recorded 224 money-doubling instances, 83 money rituals, 24 bogus lotteries, 18 occultic practices, and 13 pornographic incidents among the reported incidents.
The remaining complaints were about bogus lending schemes and persons attempting to steal money from others.
The NMC announced that it will shortly inform the public of its decision on the aforementioned TV stations.
Meanwhile, the commission stated that it will shortly publish its verdict in the Onua TV/Radio case.
The National Media Commission (NMC) issued a final warning to Onua Radio/TV and Captain Smart for an inciteful broadcast.
The National Military Commission (NMC) stated in a news release dated Tuesday, November 14, 2023, that Captain Smart had explicitly insulted the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) and other Commanders of the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) as “beasts” during a recent broadcast.
The NMC further noted that Captain Smart alleged that these commanders embezzled funds intended for soldiers on peacekeeping missions but provided no proof to back up his accusations.
According to the NMC, the broadcast was “dangerous” and “unprofessional.” It further stated that it had warned Onua Radio/TV about encouraging violence against the state in December 2022, but that the station had taken no action to resolve the situation.
The NMC granted Onua Radio/TV and Captain Smart a deadline of November 19, 2023 to:
- Retract your remarks and apologise to the CDS and his commanders.
- Apologise to the Ghanaian people for using foul words.
- Implement actions to stop the station’s harmful behaviour and strengthen the station’s regulatory compliance capabilities.
