Tamale police investigating reports of gunshots over alleged chieftaincy rivalry

Police in the Northern Region are looking into an incident that resulted in gunshots in the Tamale Metropolis suburb of Yong Dakpemyili.

According to locals, gunshots were fired throughout the town on Thursday, May 18, 2023.

They blamed the shooting on a long-running chieftaincy feud between two brothers in the town.

Abdul Wahab Dawuda, the community’s Assemblyman, verified the occurrence in a Citi News interview, revealing that some residents were injured.

“There were some gunshots as a result of two brothers feuding over a chieftaincy title. One side was to perform some particular traditional activity and some people sustained some injuries, but there is currently calm in the community, but we don’t know what may happen next.”

According to Northern Regional Police Command sources, the police visited the village to restore calm and order, but no arrests were made.

Despite the restoration of quiet, citizens remain fearful, and economic activity has slowed dramatically.

Over the years, both sides of the battle have reported deaths, injuries, and the burning and damage of property worth hundreds of thousands of Ghana Cedis.

Four people killed as US convoy ambushed in Nigeria

According to local authorities, gunmen ambushed a US convoy in south-eastern Nigeria, killing four persons.

According to reports, two of the victims of Tuesday’s attack in Anambra state were workers of the US consulate, while the other two were police officers.

The perpetrators seized three more persons and set fire to their vehicle.

According to Washington, no US citizens were in the convoy, which was travelling through a state rife with instability and a separatist insurrection.

According to Nigerian police, the attack occurred on the Atani-Osamale route in the Ogbaru region.

According to DSP Ikenga Tochukwu, a police spokesperson, security forces are currently conducting a rescue and recovery operation.

The US confirmed to the BBC that “an incident occurred on May 16 in Anambra state,” adding that Washington was collaborating with Nigerian security authorities to investigate the attack.

“The security of our personnel is always paramount, and we take extensive precautions when organising trips to the field,” the US state department said.

The Nigerian government frequently blames violent attacks in the region on the separatist Indigenous People of Biafra (Ipob) movement.

So far, the group has made no public comments on the matter.
