The verdict in the Afoko, Asabke case exposes problems with the jury system - AG

The Attorney-General and Minister for Justice, Godfred Yeboah Dame, says the jury’s unanimous guilty verdict in the case of Asabke Alangdi for conspiracy to commit murder, while delivering a hung verdict [4-3] in the case of Gregory Afoko on the same charge, the person he was accused of conspiring with, highlights the serious problems with Ghana’s jury system.

According to the Attorney-General, actions are being taken to address the issue plaguing Ghana’s jury system.

Gregory Afoko, who has been on trial for almost six years for the killing of the late Upper East Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Alhaji Adams Mahama, was retried by an Accra High Court on Thursday.

Asabke Alangdi, the second accused, was condemned to death by hanging.

This comes after the jury in the case returned a 4-3 not guilty judgement in both the murder and conspiracy to commit murder charges against Gregory Afoko.

The jury, however, rendered a unanimous decision against the second accused individual, Asabke Alangdi, on the allegation of conspiracy to commit murder.

The jury subsequently rendered a 4-3 not guilty decision in the second accused person’s murder case.

The ruling implies that Afoko’s trial will be restarted in accordance with Ghanaian law.

Mr Yeboah Dame urged members of the public, particularly attorneys, to be led properly and refrain from statements that have an undue propensity to compromise the sound and efficient administration of justice in a press release published on Friday, April 28, 2023.
