Principal was born in Fukuoka, Japan on January 3, 1950. She is the eldest daughter of Victor Rocco Principal, a United States Air Force sergeant stationed in Fukuoka at the time, and Ree Veal. Kim, her younger sister, is also present. Principal moved frequently throughout her childhood due to her father’s job, living in London, Puerto Rico, Florida, and Massachusetts. While her family was living in England, she attended 17 schools and studied at the Royal Ballet School.
In 1968, she graduated from South Dade Senior High School in Miami and enrolled at Miami-Dade Community College, where she planned to study medicine. However, only a few months into the first year of her studies, she was wounded in a vehicle accident by a drunk driver while driving home from the library. Because she was hospitalised for several months and fell behind in school, she was confronted with the potential of repeating the whole first year’s curriculum. Instead, she made a drastic change and relocated to New York City to pursue a career as an actress. She immediately proceeded to London to study with Professor Jean Scott at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art.

Principal has been married twice. She married writer-producer Christopher Skinner in 1978, whom she met a few months previously on the set of “Dallas.” After a two-year partnership, they filed for divorce in 1980, which was finalised in 1981. She then met English singer Andy Gibb in January 1981. The two married and produced a duet love song called “All I Have to Do Is Dream,” which became a minor pop success. Their relationship ended in 1982 owing to Gibb’s drug troubles.

Principal came to Los Angeles in 1970 after spending time in London. She received her first film job in John Huston’s “The Life and Times of Judge Roy Bean.” She was nominated for a Golden Globe in the category of Most Promising Newcomer for her work. Her other early work includes “The Naked Ape,” “Earthquake,” and “The Night They Took Miss Beautiful.” She then chose to pursue a profession in law and vowed to only take minor roles in order to support herself through school.
Her intentions were altered when a friend dropped off a “Dallas” screenplay with Principal.
