Huge crowds greet Otumfuo as he lands in Trinidad and Tobago for the Emancipation Day celebrations

The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, started on a major visit to Trinidad and Tobago on Sunday, July 30, 2023, to participate in their Emancipation Day Celebration.

Every August 1, the event celebrates the historic abolition of chattel slavery in the British colonies on August 1, 1834.

Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the distinguished guest of honour, was greeted warmly upon his arrival in Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago’s capital city.

The moment the jet carrying the Ashanti Kingdom’s respected king touched down at Piarco International Airport was recorded on video by Kumasi-based Opemsuo Radio.

When the Asantehene disembarked, Trinidad and Tobago government officials greeted him warmly.

The Asantehene arranged a magnificent guard of honour, which he thoroughly examined before going to a lavish welcoming ceremony.

Christine Kangaloo, President of Trinidad and Tobago, personally invited the Asantehene to be the distinguished guest on their 2023 Emancipation Day.

The country’s Prime Minister, Keith Christopher Rowley, and their Honouree Counsel took part in an official ceremony to formalise the invitation.

It is worth mentioning that Trinidad and Tobago was the first country to commemorate Emancipation Day, making Otumfuo Osei Tutu II’s participation all the more noteworthy as he joins in honouring this historic occasion.
