Career
Hauri began rapping on SoundCloud as Yung Gravy throughout his undergraduate years. He self-released his first 2016 EP, “Mr Clean,” which included the song of the same name, on the music-sharing platform. Later that year, he dropped the mixtape “Thanksgiving Eve.” By 2017, the song “Mr Clean” had garnered significant popularity on SoundCloud, propelling Hauri to national prominence. He later self-released the EP “Yung Gravity” and “Baby Gravy,” the latter of which featured a collaboration with Canadian rapper bbno$. Gravy signed to Republic Records in 2018 and released the EP “Snow Cougar,” which included the tracks “1 Thot 2 Thot Red Thot Blue Thot” and “Knockout.” “Sensational,” his debut studio album, was released in 2019. The album, which featured features by bbno$, Juicy J, Lil Baby, and Pouya, peaked at number 30 on the Billboard Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums list. “Magic” and “Whip a Tesla” were among its singles.
Gravy’s second studio album, “Baby Gravy 2,” was released in early 2020, again in collaboration with bbno$. Later the same year, he released “Gasanova,” which reached number 27 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums list and yielded the hit single “Oops!” Gravy released the EPs “Tracy’s Ultimate Fitness Mix” and “Gravy Train Down Memory Lane” in 2021. The following year, he released the EP “Cake and Cognac” and the studio album “Marvelous,” which featured his first Billboard Hot 100 song, “Betty (Get Money).” The single’s music video, which featured Gravy dancing in a fur coat, quickly went popular on TikTok. “Betty (Get Money)” eventually peaked at number 30 on the charts.
Gravy’s musical style blends elements of classic soul and funk music with new trap music. Many of his tracks sample classic oldies, such as “Gravy Train,” which samples Maxine Nightingale’s 1976 tune “Right Back Where We Started From,” and “Mr Clean,” which samples the Chordettes’ “Mr Sandman” from 1954. Gravy has claimed a diverse range of performers as musical inspirations, ranging from Smokey Robinson and the Blackbyrds to Three 6 Mafia and Outkast.
