I’ve received calls to halt the disconnection exercise – ECG boss

The Managing Director of the Electricity Company Ghana (ECG) has revealed that he has received calls to stop the disconnection exercise that they are embarking on to retrieve unpaid debts.
The calls he received, according to Samuel Dubik Mahama, came from friends, power brokers, and politicians.
He stated that the request was “can you hold off?”
This was revealed by the ECG CEO during an interview on JoyNews’ PM Express on Tuesday.
This comes on the heels of the power company’s massive disconnection operation on Monday in an effort to pay off a GH5.7 billion debt.

ECG warned its customers that if they did not pay, they would be disconnected from the grid.
According to the company, if they are unable to clear an outstanding $1 billion owed to some Independent Power Producers (IPP), they will be forced to shut down, hence the revenue mobilisation drive.
As a result, Mr Mahama believes that halting the exercise could be disastrous for ECG.
“How do we pay the Independent Power Producers? How do we pay GRIDCo? How do we pay VRA? It is a shared responsibility.
“Please let’s just do the right thing because I don’t even have the moral right after sending somebody out of the office to pick up the phone and call him and say ‘hello, can you cut X, Y and Z slack? No’ then what is the moral of the exercise?”’ he questioned.
Meanwhile, the ECG’s CEO claims that the ECG’s ongoing revenue mobilisation effort is not politically motivated.
Concerns that the exercise is being directed at some political party’s base are unfounded, according to Samuel Dubik Mahama, and should be treated with contempt.
He emphasised that he has no intention of politicising his position or mandate.
“I don’t see myself as doing politics, I see myself now as a technocrat. The biggest mistake we could ever do is to politicise the work done by this office.
“So for me, your electricity bill doesn’t have a party colour…your electricity bill is red, gold, and green with a black star in the middle, that’s your electricity bill. So believe me, as I said, the status quo balances straight out,” he said.

NACOC seizes marijuana worth $127,500 at KIA

At the Kotoka International Airport (KIA) cargo terminal, the Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) seized 54 slabs of dried leaves suspected to be cannabis worth $127,000.
On Wednesday, May 23, 2023, cannabis weighing approximately 12.67KG was intercepted.
The shipment was destined for the United Kingdom when the Commission discovered it during routine procedures in KIA’s scanning room.
This was said in a statement signed by Francis Opoku Amoah, Acting Director of Public Affairs and International Relations Department of NACOC.
It stated that “a field test conducted on the substances proved positive for cannabis.”
The Commission said it has taken control of the seized package and that investigations to capture the offenders are ongoing.
“The Commission would like to use this medium to remind the general public that the possession and transportation of illicit drugs without lawful authorization is illegal and punishable under sections 40 (1) and 41 (1) of Act 1019 of the Narcotics Control Commission Act 2020″ the statement added.
NACOC told the public that it is dedicated to working with all necessary agencies to reduce the country’s drug trafficking problem.

Collapsed building kills 5yr-old girl during downpour at Ada Magazine

Police in the Eastern Region has launched an investigation into the death of a 5-year-old girl at Ada Magazine in the Eastern Region’s New Juaben South Municipality.
The youngster, Kukua Esther, died when their building collapsed on her during Saturday’s storm, according to sources.
The girl was in the building with her 7-year-old brother when the sad tragedy occurred.
Both children were taken to Koforidua Central Hospital, where medical personnel pronounced the girl dead.
The kid, who suffered serious injuries, is still being treated, while the young girl’s body has been deposited at the Eastern Regional Hospital mortuary.
The National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) and the Ghana Police Service have begun investigations after visiting the location.
Diana Labotey, the children’s mother, described the situation as follows: “The children were standing behind me in the kitchen, but I noticed they were feeling cold, so I asked them to come into the room.” After about 10 minutes, I heard a huge noise and raced into the room, where I discovered the back of the building had collapsed on the children. The girl’s head had been badly hurt, so when we brought them to the hospital, she was pronounced dead, but the boy is still there.”

Man found dead at the banks of Yeji river

A guy in his late thirties was discovered dead on the banks of a river at Yeji in Ghana’s Pru East District of the Bono East Region.
Eyewitnesses have only identified him as Kobby, a mason.
He was discovered lifeless in a prone position on the riverbanks, wearing only black shorts.
He allegedly went to the banks to wash his clothes and other items found near the deceased.
The suspicion of robbery was dispelled when his cash, which had been distributed across his belongings, was discovered intact.
According to neighbours, the deceased suffered from epilepsy and frequently lost consciousness in unusual places.
Godwin Awidi, Assemblyman for the area, told Adom News that a delegation was sent to notify the deceased’s family, but their absence was met.
The police have been notified, and the body has been taken to the mortuary while investigations are underway.
