Howard Allen Frances O’Brien was born on October 4, 1941, in New Orleans, Louisiana. That is not a mistake. Her father, Howard, inspired her name. Howard introduced herself to the nuns on her first day of Catholic school, in first grade. For the remainder of her life, she was known as Anne.
Anne used to create short stories as a child, which she and her sisters would then act out. Growing up in the shadow of New Orleans’ gothic mansions would have a significant impact on her later writing career.
Anne relocated to Texas after losing her mother when she was 15 years old. She later attended Texas Women’s University and North Texas State College.
In 1961, Anne married her high school sweetheart, Stan Rice. The pair lived in San Francisco and graduated from San Francisco State University in 1964. She acquired a teaching career after graduating and also started writing.
Career
“Interview with the Vampire,” Anne’s short fiction, was initially published in the late 1960s. This short narrative would subsequently be developed into a novel that would forever alter her life. Though it was not well received by critics, it was a huge success with readers, who devoured a series of sequels. There were more than a dozen follow-ups in all. There is a clear link between these works and the resurrection of vampire themes in general, as well as later film franchises such as “Twilight.”
Anne and Stan welcomed a baby girl, Michele, in 1966, but she died of leukaemia six years later. Anne was bereaved, yet she continued to write. In a subsequent interview with ABC in 1993, she stated:
“I wanted to write and write and write, and pour out my emotions, and make stories, and create something. That was my response to seeing something die and something pass out of my hands like that, and seeing this beautiful child die, no matter what I did or anybody else did.”
Anne finished “Interview with the Vampire” in 1976. More than a dozen sequels would follow.
“The Mayfair Witch Trilogy,” “The Sleeping Beauty Trilogy,” and the stand-alone books “The Feast of All Saints” and “Servant of the Bones,” among many more, are among her other works.
Anne Rice sold 100 million copies of her novels over her lifetime, making her one of the most successful authors in recent American history. Anne continued to create religious writings and spiritual memoirs after her husband Stan died of brain disease in 2002.
In 1994, a film adaptation of “Interview With the Vampire” was made, starring Tom Cruise, Brad Pitt, and 10-year-old Kirsten Dunst. The film received multiple Oscar and Golden Globe nominations. It made $230 million on a budget of $60 million.
“Queen of the Damned,” a film adaptation sequel, was released in 2002. Aaliyah played her final cinematic role in the film. Seven months before the film’s premiere, Aaliyah died in a plane disaster. This picture was less successful, earning just $45 million on a budget of $35 million.
