Footballer sentenced to 12 years in prison for defiling a 13-year-old girl

An Accra Circuit Court sentenced a 27-year-old footballer to 12 years in prison for having sexual intercourse with a 13-year-old girl on three occasions in Mamprobi, Accra.

At the conclusion of the trial, the court presided over by Mrs Christina Cann found Richard Mensah guilty of three counts of defilement.

The prosecution, led by Chief Inspector Simon Tekpor, stated that the complainant was a trader and the victim’s sister.

It was stated that Mensah was a footballer who lived in the same house as the victim and complainant.

The Court heard that on March 11, 2022, the convict’s girlfriend travelled to Akraman, Accra, for a funeral.

According to the prosecution, around 3:00 p.m., Mensah took advantage of his girlfriend’s absence and invited the victim to his room to help the children with their homework.

It was stated that after the victim finished assisting Mensah’s children with the assignment, he asked his children to remain outside while he and the victim remained inside.

Mensah then undressed the victim and had sex with her through the vagina and anus, according to the prosecution.

On March 12, 2022, around 4:00 p.m., the victim was with Mensah’s children when Mensah invited her back into his room and had sex with her.

According to the prosecution, on March 14, 2022, around 1:00 p.m., the accused called the victim and asked her to help his girlfriend prepare food.

Mensah’s girlfriend went out after the victim complied and the food was prepared.

Mensah, according to the prosecution, took advantage of his girlfriend’s absence and had sex with the victim.

The prosecution stated that the complainant was looking for the victim and went to Mensah’s house around 9:00 p.m. the same day.

According to the prosecution, the victim was discovered in Mensah’s room, and she claimed he had sex with her.

I recommended Mo Salah to play in Europe – Samuel Inkoom

Former Black Stars defender Samuel Inkoom has stated that he was instrumental in bringing Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah to Europe for his first professional stay with Swiss club FC Basel.

Between 2012 and 2014, the Liverpool star, who is also the Egyptian national team captain, played for FC Basel, making 47 appearances and scoring 9 goals.

Speaking on Peace FM, the former Black Stars right back described how, after watching the Liverpool striker in training against the Black Stars, he relayed a message from his Sporting Director to him.

“I recommended Mo Salah for FC Basel,” he said.

“I used to wear the number 22 jersey when the Black Stars went to Egypt for a game, and we used to train with the team that Mo Salah played in, alongside former Ghanaian striker Eric Bekoe.”

“My club FC Basel had a Champions League match against Bayern Munich right after my game for the Black Stars, so I came with my Sporting Director, who, after noticing Mo Salah’s speed in training against us, asked me if I could speak to him on his behalf, and that was the end of it!” He expressed an interest in playing in Europe.”

When asked if he still keeps in touch with Mohammed Salah, he responded no, but Inkoom spoke to Swiss star Xherdan Shaqiri, who was with the Under-17 team at FC Basel and played with Mo Salah at Liverpool between 2018 and 2021.

“I used to speak to Xherdan Shaqiri when he was with Liverpool and occasionally told him to remind Mohammed how he got to play in Europe.”

Inkoom has 44 Black Stars appearances and 1 goal.

Sevilla wins seventh Europa League title after defeating Roma on penalties

Sevilla won a record-extending seventh Europa League title after defeating Roma 4-1 in a penalty shootout at Budapest’s Puskas Arena.

The crucial penalty was scored by Gonzalo Montiel, who converted the winning penalty for Argentina in the World Cup final.

The Europa League experts handed Roma manager Jose Mourinho his first European final defeat after five consecutive victories.

“I have to fight for these lads and therefore not say objectively that I will remain,” Mourinho told Sky Italy in the aftermath of the defeat. “I lost this one, but I return home prouder than ever this time.”

The game proceeded to extra time when Gianluca Mancini’s own goal cancelled out Paulo Dybala’s well-taken opening, and Sevilla won in the shootout.

Similar to Roma, but to a larger extent, Sevilla has undergone a gruelling domestic campaign, hampered by relegation worries until recently, but continental participation is their bread and butter.

Dybala received Mancini’s defence-splitting pass, allowing the ball to glide over his body onto his preferred left boot and reach the far corner in one fast motion (35).

However, Mancini’s own goal 10 minutes into the second half gave Sevilla parity, and after a lifeless period of extra time, Montiel settled the tie with the winning penalty – crucially, only after benefiting from a retake after custodian Rui Patricio was adjudged to encroach on his first effort, which was saved.
