How Asantehene destooled Atwima chief over Agya Koo’s building

Videos and photos of the Kumasi house of famed Kumawood actor and comedian, Kofi Adu, also known as Agya Koo, have gone viral, with social media discussing its splendour.

Agya Koo, who celebrated his 54th birthday on May 25, has long been a beloved humorous performer.

The Atwima chief was destooled over Agya Koo’s project, which took him 16 years to build, according to Graphic Online.

Multiple land deals, which many traditional leaders in Ghana are accused of engaging in, claimed the stool of a renowned chief in the Ashanti Region in 2009.

In a historic case before Kumasi’s Manhyia Palace, the Chief of Atwima, near Kumasi, Nana Kofi Agyei Bi III, was accused of serial property sales by 12 persons, including renowned actor Kofi Adu, aka Agya Koo.

After the discussions, the plaintiffs’ submissions were upheld, and the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, proclaimed Nana Agyei Bi’s destoolment.

Agya Koo informed the Kumasi Traditional Council (KTC) meeting at the Manhyia Palace in 2009 that he had purchased four plots of property from Nana Agyei Bi for a hotel project, only to discover later that the land had been sold to others.

All of the other victims who testified before the KTC presented various claims against Nana Agyei Bi, stating that he caused them to lose large quantities of money.

The chief, a member of the Kumasi Traditional Council’s Kronti Division, was discovered to have caused the destruction of a structure on one of those plots of property.

The victim, in that case, had previously taken Nana Agyei Bi to court, but before the meeting at the Manhyia Palace, Nana Agyei Bi had denied causing the demolition of the abovementioned structure, which was located on the border between Atwima and Atope.

However, at the meeting, the chief submitted an apology to the Asantehene through the Omanhene of the Manso Nkwanta Traditional Area, Nana Bi Kusi Appiah, confirming his part in the demolition of the edifice and noting that he had been sent to court for the deed.

Before declaring his intention to dethrone the chief, the Asantehene stated that he took Nana Agyei Bi’s actions seriously, especially because the chief lied to him.

Otumfuo Osei Tutu stated that he was aware of all that was going on in Atwima which implicated the chief in numerous situations. He expressed sorrow that Nana Agyei Bi had misapplied the power bestowed upon him, forcing him to be destooled. The Asantehene further said that the chief showed little respect for his elders and was even at odds with the queen of the region.

GUTA is asking answers from ECG about the true reasons of the unpredictable power outages, measures to resolve the issue, and a deadline for resolution. They also requested ECG to publish a timeframe for load-shedding so that companies may organise their activities appropriately. Because of the unpredictability of power outages, many shop owners have turned to generators, which has resulted in rising fuel costs to keep them operating during outages.

The Ghana Union of Traders’ Associations (GUTA) has joined demands for the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) to produce a load-shedding schedule, citing the persistent power outages that are badly impacting companies and livelihoods across the nation.

GUTA issued a statement emphasising the considerable impact of the power outages on many sectors, including agriculture, trade, and industry.

According to them, firms are struggling to meet production schedules and prepare for their personnel as a result of the irregular power supply, which raises production costs and degrades living conditions.

Traders, store owners, wholesalers, tailors, dressmakers, electricians, and other artists are also suffering business losses as a result of the “Dumsor phenomenon.”

This programme is part of a rebranding campaign to improve the appearance of the institutions.

Dr Adutwum went on to say that this is only one of several initiatives targeted at revitalising and improving basic education in the country.

“We’re moving to blue and white. We are painting all of the schools to give them an appealing appearance. This is the revolution Ghana deserves, and it is on its way,” the minister said at a “The free SHS tale” discussion in Accra on Tuesday, April 23, 2024.
