AFCON 2023 Qualifiers: Black Stars opens camp in preparation for a critical match against Madagascar

The Black Stars will begin training on Monday afternoon for their upcoming matchday five encounter against Madagascar in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers.

The match, which is due to take place in Antananarivo on Sunday, June 18, is crucial because Ghana hopes to qualify for the renowned tournament hosted by Ivory Coast next year.

The Black Stars will be headquartered and training in Accra before travelling for Madagascar on Friday, June 16, under the direction of coach Chris Hughton.

However, owing to injuries, the team has undergone several adjustments. Inaki Williams of Athletic Bilbao has withdrawn from the team, while Ransford-Yeboah Königsdörffer of SV Hamburg has been called up in his stead. In addition, FC Basel defender Kasim Nuhu has been asked to fill in for the injured Alexander Djiku.

Bechem United striker Hafiz Konkoni was also called up at the last minute for the critical qualification. Ghana presently leads Group E with 8 points after four games, hence a draw in this match will guarantee their spot in the 2023 AFCON competition.

The Black Stars, who are trying to break the country’s 41-year trophy drought, will be eager to build on their strong performance in the qualifiers.
