Kwame Ato Asare Ani, the prime suspect in the alleged case of police attack and extortion in the Nzema East Municipality of the Western Region, has released a video from his hideout arguing that he is not a criminal as the Ghana Police Service has stated.
Despite having a good working relationship with the police, the suspect in the video claims the information out there, including guns allegedly recovered from his gang, does not belong to them and is an attempt to frame him.
In the video, Kwame Asare can be heard saying, “The truth is that we are not thieves or armed robbers, but the police are trying to frame us as thieves.” The guns seized by the police are not ours. The Police Service is well aware that we went to seize those guns from galamsey sites. Because of my strength and toughness, the police approached me and have been working with me in the area. So the truth I want Ghanaians to know is that I am not a thief.”
The suspect in the video also stated that he is willing to tell the truth regardless of the consequences.
The Police Service announced the arrest of four suspects in connection with the March 9 attacks on personnel of the Axim Divisional police patrol team in a statement issued on April 2nd and revealed that the mastermind of the attacks, Kwame Ato Asare Ani, was still on the run.
