Fire catches Mechanic shops in Asokwa Kumasi

A terrible fire ravaged a chain of repair businesses in Asokwa, Ashanti region, late last night.

Six cars, several engines, and upholstery materials were destroyed in the fire.

Shortly after the disaster, business owners began analysing the amount of their damages after the Fire Service effectively got the situation under control with the assistance of the National Disaster Management Organisation.

At this moment, the cause of the fire is unknown.

A JoyNews team happened to pass by the site on their way back from Obuasi and immediately informed the Fire Service by ringing their hotline for quick help.

Shop owners praised the fire department’s quick reaction, which arrived at the scene in a stunning six-minute period.

The Regional Operations Officer of the Fire Service, Divisional Officer Grade II, Nicholas Opoku Aikins, remarked, “When we received the call at approximately 9:35 pm, our team arrived at 9:38 pm.” The absence of considerable traffic along the road aided their timely arrival.”

The Fire Department’s operations were supported further by an unexpected rain in the region.

“While we have assessed the extent of the damage here, we are unable to determine the exact cause of the fire at this time due to the darkness.” “The on-duty crew will thoroughly assess the situation and investigate potential causes tomorrow morning,” Divisional Officer Grade II, Nicholas Opoku Aikins stated.

Mr Aikins also emphasised the benefits of the rain and free-flowing traffic for the Fire Service’s operations.

“Generally, rain reduces the spread of fire because when rainwater falls on the flames, it evaporates, creating a humid atmosphere that hinders combustion,” he explained.

Meanwhile, the impacted mechanics have started the difficult work of calculating their losses.

When he received the phone call telling him of the fire, Richard Appiah Kubi, the local chairman of craftsmen in the region, voiced his dismay.

“Among the burned items are a variety of vehicle engines belonging to both us and our customers.” Furthermore, irreplaceable spare parts and automobiles were destroyed in the fire, including the latest models of Honda SUV, Toyota Corolla, and Nissan Pick,” Mr Kubi lamented.

Meanwhile, the mechanics have started counting their losses.
