GIS apprehends 31 accused prostitutes and Human traffickers in the Western region

According to the statement, the search as part of the investigations revealed that all of the suspects entered the country illegally and thus lacked passports or other travel identification documents, and that further searches on them and the premises revealed packs of used and unused condoms, particularly in the rooms. Furthermore, the GIS stated that, in a related development, Mr Bekoe was arrested a few months ago and granted bail to continue with the investigations into a case of harbouring foreign nationals engaged in prostitution, in violation of Act 29 of the Criminal Code of 1960, Aliens' Registration Regulation 1974 (L.I. 856), and Section 13 of the Immigration Service Act 2000 (ACT 573), among other relevant legislations in Ghana.

The Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) Western Regional Command, through its Axim Sector Command, has apprehended 31 people for alleged involvement in prostitution and human trafficking within and around the notorious brothel known as Bafana Bafana Resort in the Ellembelle District and Nzema East Municipality of the Western Region.

According to GIS, the two-day intelligence-led operation began with a raid on the brothel and other adjourning drinking establishments and temporary buildings within the Essiama enclave, culminating in the arrest of the suspects aged 22 to 37.

The operation, which lasted many hours, resulted in the arrest of 17 suspects/victims, including the facility’s owner and manager, Mr Kofi Bekoe, 62.

Following that, the remaining 12 suspects, as well as the two suspected human trafficking facilitators, were apprehended in two separate mop-up operations late Saturday evening and early Sunday morning.

“In all, the over thirty hours (30hrs) of sustained operation saw to the arrest of twenty-eight (28) suspected prostitutes, including two (2) nursing mothers.

“The other suspects were the two (2) suspected Traffickers, Mr Ndubueze Okereke, 37yrs and his wife, Ifeoma Okereke, 35yrs, all Nigerians with the exception of Mr Kofo Bekoe, who is a Ghanaian and the host of a suspected Trafficking syndicate.”

“This particular operation was planned and successfully carried out with the support from the authorities of the above-mentioned assemblies, owing to the growing concerns of the nefarious activities, especially by some of the foreign nationals within the said communities, and the impunity with which the brothel operated,” the GIS stated.

Meanwhile, it stated that the suspects are presently in the custody of the Western Regional Command Headquarters for further investigation, prosecution, and subsequent repatriation to their nation.

“The Service is by this statement averting the minds of Landlords and property owners across the country to be mindful of the existence of the above-stated laws and their consequences by checking and confirming the immigration status of all would-be foreign tenants before renting out their properties to them,” the GIS added.

Articulator truck kills four people in Kubease

Tragically, four of the bus's passengers died on the spot as a result of their injuries, while others on board suffered varied degrees of injury. Following the event, wounded passengers were immediately transferred to the Ejisu Government Hospital for treatment.

A catastrophic accident on the Accra-Kumasi road in Kubease, close to Sekyere-Nkwanta, claimed the lives of four people, including a one-year-old baby.

The deadly crash happened when an articulated truck lost control on a specific stretch of road, drifting out of its allocated lane and colliding with a Benz Sprinter bus transporting the victims.

The force of the incident was so intense that the Benz Sprinter bus somersaulted and crashed into a neighbouring ditch.

Tragically, four of the bus’s passengers died on the spot as a result of their injuries, while others on board suffered varied degrees of injury.

Following the event, wounded passengers were immediately transferred to the Ejisu Government Hospital for treatment.

Meanwhile, the corpses of the deceased were respectfully laid at Juaben Government Hospital’s mortuary.

The police have taken the driver of the articulated truck into custody to help in the continuing investigations into the horrific event.

The community and authorities are in shock and grief over the unexpected loss of life and the traumatic consequences of the incident.

As road safety remains a vital problem, this occurrence emphasises the importance of alertness and obedience to traffic laws in order to prevent more catastrophic incidents on Ghana’s roadways.

Bawumia credits ECG income jump to digitization, from ¢450 million to over a billion

Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has reported a considerable increase in revenue collection at the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), citing government-led digitization measures.

The company’s monthly income increased from GH¢450 million to over a billion, demonstrating the usefulness of digital technologies in improving operational efficiency.

Dr. Bawumia addressed guests at the 14th Commonwealth Regional Conference for Heads of Anti-Corruption Agencies in Africa, emphasising the necessity of using digital technologies in the fight against corruption and urging other member nations to follow Ghana’s lead.
