I have enough money to pay delegates in the NPP Parliamentary primaries – Alfred Obeng

Published

Mr. Obeng Boateng insisted that his words were intended as a deterrence to future competitors, not as a means of buying votes. He considers that his statements were not serious enough to merit an inquiry by a regulatory body such as the Special Prosecutor. His words, he claims, highlight his financial preparation for the next campaign as well as his determination to secure the support of delegates in his area.

Alfred Obeng Boateng, Member of Parliament for Bibiani-Ahnwiaso-Bekwai in the Western North area, has defended his recent remarks on campaign financing for the next NPP parliamentary primaries in February 2024.

In a viral audio recording, he indicated his willingness to match any offers from his political rivals by providing financial assistance to delegates in his area.

Mr. Obeng Boateng stated that he was willing to donate up to GHC20,000 to each of the over 2000 delegates in the area, indicating that he had the financial resources in dollars to equal or exceed any prospective offers from his opponents.

Mr. Obeng Boateng clarified his views in an interview with Citi News on the leaked audio recording, pointing out that some portions of the video had been altered.

He stressed that he planned to pay more than others offered, but not necessarily twice as much.

“I don’t know who said double, [but] I said I was willing to pay more than they intend doing but not double,” Mr Obeng Boateng told Citi News’ Hawa Iddrisu.

Furthermore, he emphasised that he had maintained his money in dollars and that having dollar accounts was not bad. He emphasised that the possession of dollars should not be mistaken for hoarding or illicit behaviour.

“Well, I said that as somebody who plans ahead as somebody who knows what he is doing…I should be prepared by now…they are talking about bringing their foreign partners to transfer dollars, and I equally have dollars in Ghana here. The dollar is not a contraband item, the dollar is not cocaine, and the dollar is a currency that we spend in Ghana, various people have dollar accounts, cedi accounts and euro accounts.

“I have kept my money in dollars and I don’t see any news in this and I don’t see why this should be misconstrued if I have kept money in dollars it means that the dollars have been hoarded or packed in my bedroom.”

Mr Obeng Boateng insisted that his words were intended as a deterrence to future competitors, not as a means of buying votes. He considers that his statements were not serious enough to merit an inquiry by a regulatory body such as the Special Prosecutor.

His words, he claims, highlight his financial preparation for the next campaign and his determination to secure the support of delegates in his area.

Tina Mensah blames former MCE Patrick Kumor’s death on Akufo Addo

"My late MCE did nothing to earn his dismissal; the only error he made was to back me, and I lost the primaries. "How can someone who been named the number one MCE at the national and regional levels be fired? He got various honours for his efforts as MCE. He was replaced without consulting me," she allegedly told Accra-based Onua TV/FM while visiting the grieving family to express her condolences.

Tina Ayele Mensah, a Weija-Gbawe Member of Parliament (MP), has conveyed her condolences on the tragic death of Patrick Kumor, the former Municipal Chief Executive (MCE).

Madam Mensah has ascribed Mr Kumor’s death to his removal from government in February 2024, which she says was not the wisest decision.

The MP said that the dead backed her re-election in the New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary primaries.

“My late MCE did nothing to earn his dismissal; the only error he made was to back me, and I lost the primaries.

“How can someone who has been named the number one MCE at the national and regional levels be fired? He got various honours for his efforts as MCE. He was replaced without consulting me,” she allegedly told Accra-based Onua TV/FM while visiting the grieving family to express her condolences.

According to the member, Mr Kumor was unable to endure the news and recover from the shock.

“Patrick isn’t as powerful as me. I don’t mind if you fire me; but, Patrick is not like me. Patrick couldn’t stop thinking about his bag, and his blood pressure continued to rise. “‘Afei se asa’ (it is finished), Patrick is gone,” she stated.

“I am very clear on the way forward. I believe that for persons with disabilities, we are going to support them a bit more. We are giving scholarships to every person but I am going to dedicate some of the monies to our scholarship secretariat and the GET Fund to provide free tertiary education; both tuition and accommodation to every person with a disability who makes it into the university so they can all benefit,” he stated.

Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has committed to giving free tertiary education to all those with disabilities who attend university in Ghana.

He made this known during a meeting with clerics in the Western North Region as part of his continuing national trip.

The NPP flagbearer stated that the scholarship will cover both academic and residential tuition for all people with disabilities beginning in 2025.

“I am very clear on the way forward. I believe that for persons with disabilities, we are going to support them a bit more. Aduomi denied these allegations, stating that he still enjoys the backing of NDC supporters. In an interview with Citi News, Mr Ntim voiced concern over two candidates from the same party running against each other.

Stephen Ntim, the National Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has promised to reconcile independent candidate Kwabena Owusu Aduomi into the party.

Aduomi, a former three-time NPP Member of Parliament for the constituency, chose to run as an Independent Candidate in the Ejisu by-election because he believes the NPP has failed to address critical concerns about the existing delegates’ list, jeopardising the party’s integrity and fairness.

Some NPP members accused him of treason, claiming he deserted to the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).

Aduomi denied these allegations, stating that he still enjoys the backing of NDC supporters.

In an interview with Citi News, Mr Ntim voiced concern over two candidates from the same party running against each other.

“Yes, it is worrying because the two main competitors, Aduomi and Kwabena Boateng belong to the same fold, family. We should not be looking at jubilating, I’m not jubilating. My focus now is on how to bring the Aduomi factor back to the fold, bringing him back to the family.

“So that in December when we are going to face the real political opponents, we are going us a unified NPP front. It shouldn’t be difficult at all. Whatever it is, we are going to reach out. As a national chairman, I’m promising you, we will take up the mantle and reach out to him.”
