Dr George Akuffo Dampare, the Inspector General of Police (IGP), came to Assin North on Monday, June 26 to review the security readiness in the region for the by-election on Tuesday, June 27.
Today, Monday, the IGP will meet with representatives from political parties.
Parties have been campaigning to elect their candidates.
President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has advised Assin North voters not to vote for a candidate who is on trial in court during the by-election.
On Sunday, June 25, the President told a meeting in the constituency that a candidate with legal concerns should not be voted for if the constituency is to see the requisite growth.
“They say even if Gyakye Quayson is in jail they will vote for him, are we going to vote for someone who is going to prison?
“What benefits will the people derive from voting for such a person? We want someone when he is voted for can come to me and plan how to develop the constituency.”
Former President John Dramani Mahama, on the other hand, told him that the facts of the cases involving Adamu Sakande, the late Bawku Member of Parliament who was sentenced to two years in prison after being found guilty of false declaration of office and perjury and deposed Assin North lawmaker James Gyakye Quayson, who is also on trial for the same charges, are not the same.
On Sunday, Mr Mahama warned a crowd in the constituency, “Don’t deceive the people of Assin North into thinking the two situations are the same.”
“Adamu Sakande went to prison because he lied and concealed his passport. Gyakye Quayson has not hidden his passport. Prior to voting for him in 2020, Canada had accepted that he was no longer a Canadian citizen, what crime has he done?”
