IGP leaked tape: I hired someone to record our conversation - Bugri Naabu admits

Daniel Bugri Naabu, the former Northern Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has stated that he paid someone to record the conversation on the leaked tape, which supposedly caught a scheme to depose the Inspector General of Police, Dr George Akuffo Dampare.

Bugri Naabu testified before the Parliamentary Ad-Hoc Committee probing the leaked tape on Monday, saying, “I didn’t do it myself, but I asked someone who knows how to do the recording to come and do it for me.” I did not use a telephone. I went to the mall and bought this common tape.”

Mr Naabu claimed that he filmed the meeting with the three high-ranking police officers because the problems being addressed were critical, and he also wanted evidence to present to the president.

He further said that President Akufo-Addo was given a copy of the leaked recording.

The former Northern Regional Chairman of the NPP also acknowledged the authenticity of the disputed leaked audio, which supposedly revealed a conspiracy to depose the Inspector General of Police, Dr. George Akuffo Dampare.

Bugri Naabu said openly that the important conversation that caused the scandal took place between himself and three other high-ranking Police Officers.

He went on to name the three officers as Commander Asare, COP Mensah, and Superintendent Gyebi.

Furthermore, Bugri Naabu disclosed that the discussion occurred in his office in Osu, near the Osu Police Station.

According to his version, two senior officials contacted him with a plan to lobby for the IGP’s dismissal. According to the officers, the rationale for this request was that Dr Akuffo Damapre’s activities were believed to coincide more closely with the objectives of the opposition NDC, potentially hurting the governing party’s chances in the impending 2024 elections.

According to him, the request by the highest officials worried him, so he decided to film them to make any rejection impossible.

The Ad-Hoc Committee is chaired by the acclaimed Member of Parliament for Abuakwa South, Samuel Atta Akyea, and includes a legal and human rights specialist, Dr. Isaac Lartey Annan.

This group has been tasked with investigating both the validity of the leaked audio and the complex charges that have captivated the nation’s attention.

"My late MCE did nothing to earn his dismissal; the only error he made was to back me, and I lost the primaries. "How can someone who been named the number one MCE at the national and regional levels be fired? He got various honours for his efforts as MCE. He was replaced without consulting me," she allegedly told Accra-based Onua TV/FM while visiting the grieving family to express her condolences.

Tina Ayele Mensah, a Weija-Gbawe Member of Parliament (MP), has conveyed her condolences on the tragic death of Patrick Kumor, the former Municipal Chief Executive (MCE).

Madam Mensah has ascribed Mr Kumor’s death to his removal from government in February 2024, which she says was not the wisest decision.

The MP said that the dead backed her re-election in the New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary primaries.

“My late MCE did nothing to earn his dismissal; the only error he made was to back me, and I lost the primaries.

“How can someone who has been named the number one MCE at the national and regional levels be fired? He got various honours for his efforts as MCE. He was replaced without consulting me,” she allegedly told Accra-based Onua TV/FM while visiting the grieving family to express her condolences.

According to the member, Mr Kumor was unable to endure the news and recover from the shock.

“Patrick isn’t as powerful as me. I don’t mind if you fire me; but, Patrick is not like me. Patrick couldn’t stop thinking about his bag, and his blood pressure continued to rise. “‘Afei se asa’ (it is finished), Patrick is gone,” she stated.

“I am very clear on the way forward. I believe that for persons with disabilities, we are going to support them a bit more. We are giving scholarships to every person but I am going to dedicate some of the monies to our scholarship secretariat and the GET Fund to provide free tertiary education; both tuition and accommodation to every person with a disability who makes it into the university so they can all benefit,” he stated.

Aduomi denied these allegations, stating that he still enjoys the backing of NDC supporters. In an interview with Citi News, Mr Ntim voiced concern over two candidates from the same party running against each other.

Stephen Ntim, the National Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has promised to reconcile independent candidate Kwabena Owusu Aduomi into the party.

Aduomi, a former three-time NPP Member of Parliament for the constituency, chose to run as an Independent Candidate in the Ejisu by-election because he believes the NPP has failed to address critical concerns about the existing delegates’ list, jeopardising the party’s integrity and fairness.

Some NPP members accused him of treason, claiming he deserted to the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).

Aduomi denied these allegations, stating that he still enjoys the backing of NDC supporters.

In an interview with Citi News, Mr Ntim voiced concern over two candidates from the same party running against each other.

“Yes, it is worrying because the two main competitors, Aduomi and Kwabena Boateng belong to the same fold, family. We should not be looking at jubilating, I’m not jubilating. My focus now is on how to bring the Aduomi factor back to the fold, bringing him back to the family.

“So that in December when we are going to face the real political opponents, we are going us a unified NPP front. It shouldn’t be difficult at all. Whatever it is, we are going to reach out. As a national chairman, I’m promising you, we will take up the mantle and reach out to him.”
