A young guy from the Central Region was apprehended in the Obuasi Central Market in the Ashanti Region for stealing ‘koobi,’ a famous salted fish/tilapia in Ghana.
Wendy Akuffo shared a video of the event and subsequent arrest of the alleged thief on Facebook, and it has now gone viral.
Paa Yaw, the accused Koobi thief, originates from Mankessim in the Central Region and had gone to Obuasi to hustle but ended up stealing. Koobi is a famous salted fish in Ghana that is commonly used in soups and stews.
According to MyNewsGH.com, the burglar was discovered jumping from a story building by a night watchman at the market during a patrol session.
The watchman, armed with a locally made security weapon, overcame the robber, rendered him immobile, and stole his koobi treasure. It was unclear if the koobi was the thief’s primary aim or if it served as a substitute after he failed to obtain anything of worth.
The suspected robber arrived prepared with a multi-zipped contemporary bag for his treasure but ended up with only the Koobi, which he placed in a polythene bag.
In the footage, the suspected thief is seen tied to a pole affixed to a stall with thick chains and a padlock.
The koobi robber is thought to have been part of a renowned group that has made robbing marketplaces in Obuasi township a priority.
He was turned up to police in the early hours of Thursday, July 2023, who are presently investigating the issue.
