Quick Credit officials in Marwako were arrested for privacy violations

Three (3) firms’ officials have been detained for interrogation for allegedly violating data protection regulations.

This was obtained as the Data Protection Commission began an enforcement operation of data regulations.

Hisense Ghana Limited, Quick Loan and Micro-Investments Limited, and Marwako Fast Food are the firms.

Quick Credit Investment and Micro-Credit Limited, a well-known firm that provides interest-free loans to consumers, was charged with suspected violations of the Data Protection Act 2012.

The commission’s move is in response to a consumer complaint about the company’s privacy violations.

The major problem focuses on the company’s alleged practise of exposing defaulting customers’ names in the public domain without receiving legal consent, a breach clearly forbidden under the Data Protection Act of 2012 (843).

In light of the claims, the Data Protection Commission met with representatives of Quick Credit Investment and Micro-Credit Limited. The Commission has asked the corporation to make itself available for a meeting to address these claims and consider appropriate remedies by the end of business on Monday.

During a news conference, Quinton Akrobeto, the Data Protection Commission’s Director for Regulatory and Compliance, emphasised the urgency of the problem. He claimed that a lawyer representing one of the company’s clients filed a complaint with the Data Protection Commission about the company’s illegal practises.

“We will be expecting them at the Police Headquarters for further interrogation. We received a complaint about their non-compliance, and how they are processing personal data against their customers so we received a complaint from one lawyer who wrote in respect of their client and it is upon that that we have followed up to this place.”

“What they [the companies] do is harass their customers, go to their homes and churches, and let the whole world know that they owe them, which is against their privacy,” Mr Akrobeto added.

Officials from two other firms were also detained for interrogation over alleged privacy violations.
