Sammy Gyamfi, the National Democratic Congress (NDC)’s National Communications Officer, has expressed gratitude to the court presiding over the case involving James Gyakye Quayson, the Member of Parliament for Assin North.
While the High Court has deferred the case until July 11 to rule on the plea for a stay of proceedings, Mr Gyamfi highlighted that the judge gave all of Mr Quayson’s counsel an opportunity to convey their concerns to the court.
“Our appeal to the court is straightforward and clear, and we have made our submissions. The judge has adjourned the case, which is a positive development. I commend the judge for allowing all of our lawyers to make their submissions. It was a good observation,” Mr Gyamfi stated.
Earlier today, the legal team for the beleaguered MP asked the court to delay the proceedings so that the Court of Appeal may reconsider the trial judge’s decision to hear the case on a daily basis.
Tsatsu Tsikata, the lead attorney, contended that not staying the proceedings would prejudge the appeal. The prosecution, led by Godfred Dame, objected to the application.
Mr Gyamfi expressed hope on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen on Friday that the judge will allow the Court of case to hear the case following the delay.
While the judge has the right to govern the trial through adjournments, the Constitution requires the judge to apply discretion fairly.
He is still hopeful about the outcome.
