Thibaut Courtois of Real Madrid has damaged the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee and will miss the rest of the season.
The Belgium international, 31, will have surgery in the following days.
Courtois has won Spain’s La Liga twice since joining Real Madrid in 2018. He was awarded the finest custodian in the world at last year’s Ballon d’Or awards.
He has appeared in 230 games for Real Madrid, who face Athletic Madrid in their opening La Liga game of the season on Saturday.
Before joining Real Madrid in 2018, Courtois won the Premier League twice with Chelsea and La Liga once with Atletico Madrid.
He also won the Champions League in 2022, with a man-of-the-match performance against Liverpool in the final.
According to rumours, former Manchester United custodian David De Gea is a candidate to replace the Belgian.
