Ghanaian defender Alexander Djiku has signed for Fenerbahce on a free transfer

Alexander Djiku, a Ghanaian defender, has joined Turkish giants Fenerbahce on a free transfer.

The 28-year-old has agreed to a three-year deal with an option for a fourth year.

Strasbourg, Djiku’s previous club, had wanted to arrange a new agreement with him before his contract expired in June. Djiku, on the other hand, chose to move on, and Fenerbahce made a more appealing offer. The club formally confirmed Djiku’s arrival after he passed his medical on Monday.

While Fenerbahce gained his services, other teams such as Mainz 05 in the Bundesliga and Lille in the French Ligue 1 were also interested. However, Djiku was pleased by Fenerbahce’s vision, which led to his choice to join the Turkish club.

Fenerbahce expressed their pleasure in a welcoming message, saying, “Welcome to our family, Alexander.” We wish you many victories and championships with our Fenerbahce.”

Djiku joined Strasbourg in 2019 and rapidly established himself as an important member of the club. Last season, he was their captain, and he helped them avoid relegation. Although he was on the verge of leaving the club last summer with an agreed-upon transfer to Hoffenheim, the deal fell through at the last minute owing to a disagreement about agency commission.

Djiku, who was born in France, was elected to represent Ghana internationally, making his debut for the national team in 2020. He was a member of Ghana’s World Cup roster and has played for the national team on multiple occasions.
