Gyan retires as Ghana’s all-time leading scorer, with 51 goals in 109 games.

He had an 18-year club career, beginning with Liberty Professionals in 2003 and ending with a brief stay with Legon Cities in 2021.

Asamoah Gyan’s contributions to Ghana’s triumph in football extended beyond the World Cup, as he represented his country in a number of other prominent events.

He proudly wore the Ghanaian shirt at the 2004 Summer Olympics and played an important role in seven Africa Cup of Nations games, which were held in 2008, 2010, 2012, 2013, 2015, 2017, and 2019.

Ghana’s major successes in these tournaments include finishing third in 2008 and second in 2010 and 2015.

Gyan’s football career began in 2003 when he signed with Liberty Professionals, a well-known team in Ghana’s Premier League.

His exceptional abilities were clear as he quickly drew notice, scoring an astounding 10 goals in only sixteen games.

Gyan was quickly noticed by Serie A heavyweights Udinese, where he spent three seasons.

Prior to joining Udinese, he refined his abilities with two loan spells at Modena, where he made an impression with fifteen goals in 53 league outings.

Gyan’s goal-scoring prowess continued in Udinese, where he netted eleven times in 39 league games.

Gyan began a new chapter in his career when he joined Ligue 1 club Rennes in 2008. Over the course of two seasons, he demonstrated his scoring power, netting fourteen goals in forty-eight league games.

Gyan reached a watershed moment in 2010 when he signed for Sunderland in the highly competitive Premier League.

His arrival broke the club’s transfer record, demonstrating the club’s trust in his ability. Gyan made an impression by scoring 10 goals in thirty-four Premier League games over the course of two seasons.

Continuing his adventure, Gyan spent the 2011 season on loan with Al Ain in the UAE Pro-League.

His prolific scoring form was on full show as he won the league’s top scorer title with an incredible twenty-four goals in twenty-seven games.

Such a fantastic achievement led Al Ain to permanently retain Gyan’s services for the next season.

He rose to the occasion once more, guiding his club to the UAE Pro-League title while also finishing as the league’s top scorer with an astounding twenty-eight goals in thirty-two matches.

Gyan’s scoring prowess reached new heights during the 2013-2014 season, when he surprised viewers by scoring forty-four goals in forty matches, establishing his reputation as a respected figure at Al Ain.

Gyan returned to the Ghana Premier League after stints with Kayserispor in Turkey and NorthEast United in India, joining Legon Cities for the 2020/2021 season.

However, his comeback to domestic football was marred by a lack of goals, as he appeared in five games without scoring.

Gyan, now an acclaimed ex-Ghana captain, commemorated his amazing career in 2022 by releasing his biography, “LeGYANdry.”

The book, which goes into the inner facts of his life and football career, was released at Accra’s prestigious Kempinski Gold Coast Hotel, enthralling fans and readers with its intriguing tale.

"The spectators threw urine and insulted me and the players. We needed to protect ourselves, so we raced to the pitch, but to be honest, I responded to them," he told Akoma FM. "As a 30-year lover of the game, I had never seen anything like this before. It was more like a fight than a football match."

Bashir Hayford, the head coach of the Hearts of Oak Lions, delayed his team’s game against Bechem United on Saturday by sitting in the centre of the pitch due to biassed officiating.

During the game at Nana Fosu Gyeabour Park, Hayford took a seat in the centre of the pitch, forcing a 20-minute stoppage in play.

The legendary Ghanaian trainer’s actions were in protest of what was described as one-sided officiating.

Following a brief break, Hayford left the field, allowing the game to resume. Despite playing with one man down, Bechem averted a loss on the day.
