Dr Anthony Osei Akoto, a former Old Tafo MP dead

Dr Anthony Osei Akoto, a former Member of Parliament for the Ashanti Region’s Old Tafo constituency, has died.

On Monday, March 20, 2023, this was announced on Parliament’s Facebook page.

The cause of death of the 69-year-old former Finance Minister is unknown.

“Hon. Dr Anthony Osei Akoto, former Old Tafo MP, has died. “May he rest in peace,” Ghana’s Parliament said in a statement.

Dr. Akoto Osei was a professional economist. On March 27, 2002, he was appointed to the management board of Merchant Bank (Ghana) Ltd. He was previously an associate professor at Dillard University (USA) and a research assistant at the Center for Policy Analysis (Ghana).

In May 2003, Osei was appointed deputy minister of Finance and Economic Planning and served as the government’s chief economic adviser. Following the death of then-Minister Kwadwo Baah Wiredu, he was promoted to substantive Minister for Finance and Economic Planning.

He held that position until January 6, 2009, when the government was handed over to the National Democratic Congress, which had won the General Elections in 2008.

After being nominated by President Nana Akufo-Addo and going through the vetting process in Ghana’s parliament, Osei was sworn in as Minister of Monitoring and Evaluation in February 2017.

The Monitoring and Evaluation Ministry was established to evaluate, monitor, and plan review summits and forums in accordance with the government’s policies on evaluating the progress of its own ministries.

In May 2017, President Nana Akufo-Addo named Anthony Akoto Osei to his cabinet of nineteen ministers. The names of the 19 ministers were submitted to Ghana’s Parliament and announced by the House Speaker, Rt. Hon. Prof. Mike Ocquaye.

As a Cabinet minister, Anthony Akoto Osei was a member of the president’s inner circle and assisted in key decision-making activities in the country.
