Plies was born on July 1, 1976, in Fort Myers, Florida, as Algernod Lanier Washington. He attended Fort Myers Senior High School, where he was a defensive back and receiver on the football team. He graduated as the valedictorian of his class and was named the best-dressed student in his class. Plies attended Miami University and played wide receiver for Nod Washington’s football team from 1995 to 1997. He then transferred to the University of Central Florida but left before the end of the school year. Plies and his stepbrother, known as Big Gates, founded the independent record label Big Gates Records in the late 1990s. Plies signed to the record label Slip-N-Slide-Records after the two of them recorded a single together and promoted it extensively.
Personal Life
Brandy Lacole Lyons, Plies’ ex-girlfriend, gave birth to their son in October 2003. After a nightclub shooting in Florida on July 2, 2006, police charged Plies with illegal possession of a concealed weapon. Five people were injured in the shooting, and members of Plies’ entourage face attempted murder charges. The filming began after Plies’ microphone was cut off due to his performance running over time. According to the promoter, Plies became enraged, shouted, and started a fight that resulted in numerous bullets being fired. Plies was arrested for driving while intoxicated in Wesley Chapel, Florida, in 2017. Plies was arrested after refusing a roadside breathalyser test.
Career
Plies’ debut album, “The Real Testament,” was released in August of 2007. The album’s first single, “Shawty,” featured T-Pain and topped the Billboard Hot Rap Tracks chart. The song also reached number nine on the Billboard Hot 100. The next two singles were also successful, and the album was certified gold by the RIAA within six months. “Definition of Real,” his second album, was released in June 2008, only ten months after his debut. The first single, “Bust It Baby Pt. 2,” featuring Ne-Yo, reached number two on the Hot Rap Tracks and number seven on the Hot 100. The album debuted at number two on the Billboard 200, selling over 200,000 copies in its first week. Four months after its release, the album was certified gold.

Plies released his third album, “Da REAList,” in December 2008. In its first week, the album sold over 110,000 copies. Ashanti and Chris J performed on his singles for the album. During this time, Plies appeared as a guest on Ludacris’ song “Nasty Girl,” as well as DJ Khaled’s single “Out Here Grindin’.” Plies’ fourth album, “Goon Affiliated,” was released on June 8, 2010. Bei Maejor made two guest appearances on the album’s first two singles. “Goon Affiliated” debuted at number five on the Billboard 200 despite receiving mixed reviews. He continued to make guest appearances on other rappers’ songs, including Young Jeezy’s “Lose Your Mind,” which was nominated for Best Rap Performance By A Duo Or Group at the 2011 Grammy Awards for Best Rap Performance By A Duo Or Group.
Plies has continued to perform and has released a number of mixtapes and singles. Plies’ fifth album, “The Real Testament 2,” a sequel to his debut, was released in 2020.
