In solidarity with her son, the mother of disgraced Spanish football director Luis Rubiales has locked herself inside a church and gone on a hunger strike.
Angeles Bejar urged a stop to the ‘inhumane witch-hunt’ after kissing Spain’s Jenni Hermoso on the lips after their Women’s World Cup victory.
Rubiales, who refused to resign as president of the Spanish football federation, has been temporarily suspended by FIFA, the international football’s regulatory body.
Bejar, a former hairdresser, has barricaded herself inside the Divina Pastora church in Motril, east of Malaga in southern Spain, and has begun a ‘indefinite, day and night’ hunger strike until ‘justice is served.’
Bejar ordered that Hermoso ‘speak the truth’ because the player argued that the kiss was not consensual, despite Rubiales’ testimony.
According to Marca, she questioned ‘why are they being so nasty to him’ and ‘what is behind the narrative’ since ‘he is incapable of injuring anybody.’
At 2 p.m. local time, family members gathered at the church with bottles of water, hoping to talk with Rubiales’ mother.
They had a local doctor with them who refused to speak to the press or answer any questions.
They were taken to the church entrance by two police officers and let in after many minutes of hammering on the front door. Police prevented a huge number of journalists from following in the family and the doctor.
Rubiales is claimed to have landed in Motril over the weekend and is staying with his daughters, as well as meeting up with pals who are ‘backing him all the way,’ according to reports.
Rubiales grew up in Motril, in the Andalucia area, and returned for a weekend vacation. Angeles’ spouse is a previous mayor of the resort.
It comes as the Spanish football federation has another emergency meeting to discuss Rubiales’ position.
