Residents of Daasebere Estate in the New Juaben South Municipality of the Eastern Region detained a former Community Policing Assistant (CPA) stationed at the Koforidua Central Police Station.
The former CPA, known by police as Theophilus, was apprehended in the early hours of Tuesday after attempting to cut power service lines on a pole in the village.
After sighting the suspected thief atop the pole, a young man on his way to work sounded the alarm. The suspected thief almost stabbed the young guy with a knife, but his shouts drew the attention of a security guard, who assisted in apprehending him.
When Citi News got on the scene, the young guy had been assaulted and tied to the identical pole he had climbed to cut the cables.
Despite the fact that the suspect supplied his name as Acheampong Emmanuel, the police patrol squad that arrived instantly identified him and called him by his true name, Theophilus, before dragging him away.
Benjamin Appiah, Assemblyman for the Old Estate West electoral district, spoke to Citi News about recent criminal activity in the region.
“Our main issue is the stealing of items in our community. It has been going on often, and when we catch them, we turn them in to the police. We are trying to protect the community. This morning I was called that another thief had been caught and beaten, and was tied to a tree. We came and rescued him, so I called the police to assist me. This is about the 4th or 5th time a thief has come here to steal. We have about three or four girls here who have been wounded with knives by thieves after snatching their phones. I don’t like it when thieves are caught by residents and beaten,” he explained.
Meanwhile, several residents in the neighbourhood who have had frightening encounters with thieves have urged the Ghana Police Service to increase patrols throughout the day and night.
“We are requesting that the police increase patrols here,” they remarked.
Citi News can also establish that two suspects detained last week Friday by the Nyamekrom Community watchdog committee after breaking into a residence in the region are getting treatment at the Eastern Regional Hospital in Koforidua’s intensive care unit.
The two suspects, who are part of a gang that terrorises locals in the region on motorcycles, were apprehended by a community monitoring committee that had set up an ambush.
Nana Boaheng Enoch, the Assemblyman for Nyamekrom Electoral Area, who told Citi News that he has been targeted by criminals, said the watchdog group will go to whatever length to cleanse their community of crooks.
