Kurt Okraku’s candidature for a second term as President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) has been contested by new Edubiase owner Abdul Salam Yakubu.
He is asking delegates to oppose Okraku in the next GFA elections on September 27.
Yakubu is a strong supporter of George Afriyie, who ran against Okraku in the 2019 elections and is now running for president again. Afriyie and Okraku were vetted on Monday at Accra’s Alisa Hotel, with the Elections Committee scheduled to reveal their decisions on August 28.
Yakubu declared his opposition to Okraku’s president, citing worries about the status of Ghanaian football during his presidency. He emphasised the underperformance of national teams and clubs on the African scene, citing Techiman City, Unity FC of Richmond, Phar Rangers, Tema Youth, and Hasaacas as examples.
“Kurt Okraku does not deserve another term,” Yakubu said in a statement to Kumasi-based FOX FM. Take a look at how our game has degraded over time. Our national teams are struggling, and our clubs in Africa are no better.” He questioned Okraku’s leadership even further, asking, “Is this how to lead the GFA?”
The GFA Elections will choose the new President and leadership of the Ghana Football Association, with delegates expected to vote next month in Tamale.
