Bryan Acheampong, Minister of Food and Agriculture, has indicated that cornbread might be used as a replacement in Senior High Schools (SHSs) across the country.
The Abetifi Member of Parliament (MP), speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen, said the plan has been on his mind for some time, considering the cost of importing wheat for bread.
“It’s maize with a bit of cassava flour, and since we don’t produce wheat in Ghana, we don’t always have to import it because it has the same nutritional value as maize,” he explained.
Mr Acheampong praised it as a brilliant concept that will save the country money, predicting a large maize yield this year.
As a result, he has announced preparations to consult with the Ghana Education Service (GES) and Education Minister Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum on the next steps.
“I want us to conduct a survey in our schools because the cornbread is very nice and the students will enjoy it,” he said.
